So Many Blends to Smoke

My two ounce sample of Holiday Match is running low, and it’s so good I ordered eight ounces from Pipes and Cigars.

Most online tobacco merchants tempt you to spend a hundred dollars for free shipping.

So a man can’t have too much tobacco, with the dad blamed gubbermint always talking about punitive taxes and the do gooders are on a crusade after tobacco like the Women’s Christian Temperance Union went after Demon Rum. Besides, it keeps well and some even improves with age. I rounded up the order to a hundred bucks,

My, what an assortment I’ll get to smoke.

Pipes and Cigars had a special of $27 for all six of Russ Oulette blends of Brigadier. I checked that off.



Tonight before bed I’m savoring a big bowl of Larry’s Blend in my first truly fine pipe I paid $5 for at a Wichita gas station in 1978, a WDC Giant Wellington.

Our friend Jim Minks has reviewed three thousand blends of tobacco, including the Brigadier series. Jim likes em’, so I figure I will too.

We are blessed beyond measure, with blends to smoke.


Pipe smoking is among the cheapest luxuries, and we take it so much for granted, you know?

Tell me about it! I've got about three dozen jarred blends, plus about the same number of sealed tins, none of which I'm chomping at the bit to crack open, lest I find myself even more overwhelmed by the sheer number of options at hand. Even with the full-steam-ahead Draconian assault, the variety that exists out there is nothing short of headache inducing, just thinking about it.

And, every blend is some combination of burley, Virginia, and/or oriental base tobaccos with Latakia, Perique, and/or Maryland as spice or condiment tobaccos, plus toppings or casings.

Somewhere between Happy (Brown) Bogie and Creme Brulee might be the perfect blend.
