I have been looking for an Old Dominion Virginia Planter cob for a while now. A lot of places seemed out of stock, but just kept circling back to the sites and finally found one with some in stock so I picked one up. It'll be interesting to see how I like the reed stem versus the plastic/acrylic stems I have on my current collection of MM cobs. Can't wait to get this baby in and give her a test run!

CCW, that's just like the pipes my grandfather taught me to make as a kid. We'd grab a corn cob from the crib, cut it in half, hollow it out, poke a hole in the side with a phillips head screwdriver, and add a piece of cane from the canebrake on our farm. The perfect simple smoke. If you can get straight dark fired tobacco or twist, you'll get a very old-timey smoke in it.

Good info, there haparnold. I may just pick some twist up. I do have a bit of an interest in the twist tobacco blends. I do have some ODF laying around here somewhere, so until I can pick up some twist sometime, I reckon it'll do.

Those are cool pipes. I've wanted to give one a try for a while. As a similar "old time" experience, I once smoked some home-grown tobacco (grown and prepared by one of the forum members here) out of a clay pipe while drinking a home-brew made by a good friend. It was all very good! And it gave me faith that pipers have the ability to continue the hobby regardless of regulation. Now, it wasn't as good as a favorite briar pipe full of Nightcap accompanied by a generous pour of a good single barrel bourbon, but it was still good :puffy:

Thanks weez! I just got it in the mail and I love how this sucker feels in the hand. I love how simple it really is. It literally is just a cob, bored with three holes, one plugged with hardwood and a piece of reed shoved in the smaller hole. It's simpler than the MM pipes, but they're both different. I just ran a bowl of Boswell's Premium Burley through it and it smoked all the way down on one light without a problem. Perfect draft, fits comfortably in the mouth. The end of the stem is a little thicker than any plastic/acrylic/vulcanite stems, but it's still easy to clinch. It's light as a feather and a real pleasure to smoke. I really like this pipe and look forward to trying many other blends in it. I think I'm going to stuff some ODF in it next and see how that tastes.
@lawdawg, I do keep a little "home brew" around for that once in a while back porch sippin' feel good time. Might have to give it a go later today. For a full-fledged experience, could always pull out the bibs, straw hat and rocking chair and smoke that cob with your favorite hooch while listening to the frogs down by the river. Now each one is a different experience. You have the old-time feel with the cob and home brew, and the finely tuned and crafted briar filled with premium tobacco and a good single barrel...each one will give you a different experience, but both are very good. Here's to sippin' your hooch and your tobacco! :puffy:
