I had a childhood flashback today. I used to go to sleep away camp for a month every summer when I was around 10yrs old. When we'd camp out I remember we'd take pepper, of salt n pepper, and roll it up using standard loose leaf paper and smoke it. I was 10 so don't ask me why we did this... I don't even remember how it tasted, but I'd assume not good at all. I've got a feeling I know the answer, but anyone else ever do such a thing?

I once rolled up a bundle of grass in a piece of paper, lit it on fire, and tried to suck on it. (I was probably six)

Just lawn grass.
Sheesh, the dumb stuff you do as a kid. Next time I'll cure the leaves first.

LOL ... good plan!
We used to dry and smoke weeds that were found in country road ditches ... does that count? :puffy:

Not pepper but.....
When I was 10-11 years old I read in one of my grandmothers's magazines, (I believe it was "Good Old Days" magazine), about how people recalled smoking corn silks during the depression. Me, living on a farm, had a corn crib full of dried ear corn. The neighbor kid and I rolled up some in newspaper and commenced to "smoking" it. We were having a big time, sitting on top of that huge pile of corn, in a wooden corn crib!
Then my Dad appears out of NOWHERE and in one swift motion yanked me outta the crib and whooped my ass good! Asked me what the %&*@#%^^&& was I thinking???? Said I coulda burned the whole crib down! Years later I realized my stupidity, ALL of our livestocks feed was in that one huge crib, and we eked out our living and survived by the grace of that livestock..... Ah, Youth....... :puffy:

@beefeater33 ... What a great story, it sure is amazing what we realize now as adults what we didn't understand as children.
As far as me... When I was 9 years old on a camping trip up in Yosemite, a friend and I, rolled up pine needles in a dried out leaf and smoked it... We figured since we drank tea made of it it would be ok... IT WASN'T! Oh how horrible the experience! :P

Yep. As a kid, me and my cousin would sneak off and roll up pretty much anything that would burn in notebook paper and smoke away.

Things like dead leaves, rabbit tobacco, weeds, and even twine!

Same here, though less adventurous than many, nor can I recall what it was we tried to inhale. It was nasty, though!
Crowning achievement of my crawling days: sticking bobby pins into the electric outlet under the piano. Once I finally got it pulled apart enough to get one prong in each side, we were cookin' with gas! (No fire engines were needed; only an electrician).

petes03,
I'm glad you mentioned rabbit tobacco. I used to smoke the heck out of that stuff. In rolling papers made from brown paper grocery bags. I loved it.
Tried it years later as an adult. Not so good as I remembered. I think it's government regulations. Rabbit tobacco was much better back in the day...
The other thing we smoked, that no one else has mentioned is coffee. Quite foul, and hard to keep lit, but an experience everyone should have.
Smoking coffee will make one appreciate even really bad pipe tobacco!

Grape vines. Very porous for an open draw but they do smoke hot. I've often wondered what that did to our lungs.

@robwoodall. Yeah, I know what you mean. I tried it later in years too, and it wasn't good. We also used to chew it. I tried that again a couple of years ago as well, not too good either! lol

I used to just pick the long hollow reed like stems out in the fields and smoke them, didn't roll them in anything, just lit the stem itself and puffed away. Didn't taste too bad as I remember.
