I enjoy fishing from a kayak when the temps warm up. Thinking this year I'd like to bring a pipe along. Can anyone give me a good recommendation of some sort of "caddy" or "pouch" that's pretty small? I travel very light when I fish from a kayak, as there's not too much storage room available.
Thanks!

Mojo,
I fish out of a Hobie Outback all the time here in Georgia. Primarily fly fishing on rivers, but also spin gear on lakes. I always take my pipe with me. It’s on of my favorite things to do. Here are my thoughts after much trial and error.
1. Avoid Virginia flakes! It will be windy and those flakes will get very hot. Focus on easy to pack and tamp tobaccos, burley blends do well. Orientals too. Latakia tastes bad to me in heavy sun.
2. Essential gear: wind cap, a rubber stand for pipe (my fav below), lots of pipe cleaners, your cadence will be faster thus more steam.
3. Zippo side flame lighter. Matches don’t work well.
4. Try and save your smoking for when you pull over for lunch, or stop and rest with a few puffs.
5. I don’t like cob pipes, but they are ideal for water and you won’t cry if you lose one. I use a Peterson sitter or a Tsuge pipe with screw top since it allows you hold baccy for later.
I use this rest on my side board.

Get a few wind caps.

Hers my gear, both belly boat and kayak. You can see pipes in action.

For active outdoors and if paddling, I like a full bent pipe with wind cap or a super light cob etc. here are my two go to pipes in real life. A Peterson system 304 and a cob.
Military mount pipes are great because you can break them down after smoking and stow in a water sealed bag in your pocket etc.

Oh, and while thinking about it, here is a pearl. If you want to smoke aromatics outdoors it can be tricky because they tend to burn hot and bite you. That’s where the Drew Estate (Tsuge) pipes come in handy. With these pipes you can put Burley or mild tobacco in the top bowl and Aros in the bottom compartment, then you can taste the Aros while smoking. I learned this trick along the way.
Example. Maple flavored Aro on bottom and Solani aged burley on top.

Thanks for the insight, and I like your gear (especially your trailer). I run a Vapor 10 with spinning gear here in KC. I've modified a cob with a short bent forever stem, so I think I'll be taking that one along. I also have several batches of tobacco jarred up, so I'll need to look through those to see what matches nicely to your suggestions.

aro222......it's a Walker Briar Works acrylic stem. It's about 2" long with a very mild bend. It fit kinda loose when it arrived, but I added a tiny dab of gel super glue to the tenon to tighten it up(let it dry before inserting).

I only smoke outside, most of the time under my porch! The wind does not effect me much, but sometimes the rain will blow in. The cold this year got to me. Pleased we are moving towards Summer. You have to be a dedicated smoker to smoke outside in the winter!
