Smoking moldy tobacco

Ok so in another thread on blockade runner one of the guys said that they sometimes get mold growth, it is a crumble cake, and they do not scrape off the mold but rather just smoke it. Is that healthy? It doesn't sound healthy. What say you? Who does what?

I don't know if its harmful or bad or tastes funny or whatever. I simply wouldn't smoke it. I usually live by the "waste not, want not" way of thinking, but im not messing with any moldy tobacco.

That's only if you pack it so the moldy part would be on top.
If the mold was throughout or even just located in the middle of the pipe when you were packing, it would just get heated up by the ember on top and you would be smoking warm moldy air. Not yet hot enough to kill off anything bad for you.
I wouldn't do it but that's just me.

I would toss it or scrape it off. Not worth the risk of getting anything from it. There's always more baccy out there.

it is probably NOT mould but what cigar smokers call bloom... the crystalization of the tobacco oils.

I just read the OP, and remarked to myself "he's talking about me!" I can assure that it is mold, but until I see a persuasive post proclaiming danger, I will continue to ignore it. I should specify here that it didn't occur with every can, it occurred only weeks after opening, and the cans are stored in a dry place. I only handle the edge I break off (little or no finger derived contamination). My mentioning this at all was to prepare others to an identified ideosyncracy confirmed by other consumers in internet postings. I did not personally contact the Mfr. as someone else already had.

I will watch this thread for other inputs.....

Okay, I'm back. I just looked at a half-used block of kajun kake. It looks like someone coated the entire top and bottom with flour. So what is that?

Hey its not just you Bobby I have seen other guys in the past talk about getting mold in their tobacco on occasion, but I'm sure with toppings and casings with food grade materials it has to happen sometimes; dry storage place or not. We will see what happens with mine. I normally jar things that I know won't get smoked right up.

You know if it is mold I would probably peel off the top layer and smoke what is next. At 13 bucks a can, can't afford to just chuck it.

Some folks may polish-off 2oz within 2 weeks, so no issue. I have 6 unopened cans left; surely good until after opening. I have no intention of transferring them to jars. Even if it's really just sugar crystals, there's still something about the appearance.........

I may just call the maker to get the story first-hand.

coated like that it aint mold, if it's white it aint mold, if it comes off on your finger it aint mold.
it is very hard to make tobacco mold once it is process3ed.

Whether or not it is mold, I'm sure the safe bet is to scrape it off and carry. One thing people forget, however, is there are many food items that have mold as a part of the creation. Many cheeses being the first thing to come to mind.
