I received a sample of Semois La Brumeuse with the Butz Choquin Brasilia with the horn stem. I was wondering if there is a bowl size most used with Semois, not having tried it yet I don't want to waste it, thanks in advance.

From the reviews I've seen, it's very dry, so it should be packed a little tight....as for the size of the bowl, it hasn't been something I've gleaned....it's a burley derivative and supposedly has its own flavor...

experiment and tell us in proletarian terms, how this worked out for you.

I have been using a Falcon with a meerschaum bowl, pretty average size, .70 x 1.35... tastes very much like cigar leaf to me. I did not care for it in a briar pipe or a corncob.

I would imagine that the quality/flavors vary from year to year...the process is basically to cook it in a rotating oven...making it dry...and likely adding some sort of flavor...single leaf?...supposedly only leaf from the immediate area...so, kind of organic....interesting for sure!

Your input was much appreciated, I have an old Meerscaum Horn with a small bowl, possibly a Cheroote pipe but when I want a small smoke I do use it, will try it in this pipe, regards.

I have found a larger air hole helps as well. Due to the rather thick ribbon cut, and dryness of the tobacco, it helps with the tighter pack that is required.
Semois will burn rather quickly without a tighter pack.

fish', because of its dryness, and the fact that it burns fast, I have used mostly fairly deep bowls, specifically a larger bent Ferndown, a MM freehand, and a Joh's bent apple with an extra large bowl. I should add, I enjoyed the flavor of this interesting burley variant from the first puff, so I was looking to extend the experience. I think it would be fine in a small or medium pipe, but a rather short smoke if you really love Semois. Big and deep with the bowl if you really have a taste for Semois, is my take on this.

As others have said, a tall bowl, especially one on the larger side will let the semois express itself best.
IME, semois is a real chameleon when it comes to the pipe it's in.

I enjoy Semois in a medium sized cob such as the MM Washington or Legend.
It makes a great morning smoke with coffee much like Burley does.
Recently, I made a blend using Semois as the base with added Perique and Cavendish lightly spritzed with Jameson's Irish Whiskey.
Semois definitely took a few bowls to appreciate but I'm glad that I gave it the chance.

I use a small bowl because I can only enjoy it for a short period of time.

I smoked it in a cob as well. It was described to me by the donor as being "different". That one word description was the absolute most accurate I've ever run across in the way of a pipe tobacco review. It does burn fast and playing around with the packing is required. It wasn't my cup of tea but I know there are those that enjoy it. I recently learned that there are several blenders of Semois and the strengths and flavors vary greatly. Let us know your thoughts.
