Smoked a cob for the first time today

My son brought me back a corn cob pipe from a trip he took as a kid many years ago-my kid's 41 now. :D Never smoked it til now nor tried a cob before, but fired it up with ODF. Discovered that the tobacco flavor came through more clearly and with a naturally slight sweet flavor than it does in a briar. Can see why some folks like cobs.

I find cobs wonderful for burley blends (if you like those). A favorite of mine right now is PC Log Cabin, Va/bur/Cav, in a cob.

Welcome to the wonderful world of cobs. Even though I smoke briars most often at home, one doesn't really NEED more than a cob. Wonderful smokers

Cobs are great. Very simple, inexpensive, durable, and great smokers. For the price you can't beat them, and I agree that burley blends are best in a cob.

There is certainly no "best" material from which to fashion a pipe. And the history of "briar" is every bit as much marketing as utility (though what glorious utility it has turned out to be).
My personal favorite combinations are:
- Burley in corn cob
- Virginia in pear wood
- Latakia and Oriental in Briar
- "English" Virginia/Latakia, and maybe Perique, in Meerschaum.
The only combination I can't enjoy is any Latakia blend in a cob. Though I suppose of the cob is very well caked, as with any pipe due for reaming, any tobacco will smoke satisfactorily. Right up until it doesn't.
Oh the complexity of our hobbie
- Perique/Virginia in any of the above
But that's just me.

Perique, our taste buds must be pretty similar. I couldn't agree with your synopsis more; Latakia is the only thing I've found that actually disagrees with a cob.
