There is certainly no "best" material from which to fashion a pipe. And the history of "briar" is every bit as much marketing as utility (though what glorious utility it has turned out to be).
My personal favorite combinations are:
- Burley in corn cob
- Virginia in pear wood
- Latakia and Oriental in Briar
- "English" Virginia/Latakia, and maybe Perique, in Meerschaum.
The only combination I can't enjoy is any Latakia blend in a cob. Though I suppose of the cob is very well caked, as with any pipe due for reaming, any tobacco will smoke satisfactorily. Right up until it doesn't.
