Really beautiful. Now another artist to check out. Is that straight or flame grain on the bowl?
Just read about Satou @ Pipedia. Shows him working w/o safety glasses. Describes a unique finish, and characteristic swooped stem with secrets regarding each feature.

Pretty much straight with a little flame with birdseye covering the top according to Smokingpipes.com will know more when it arrives.

The curved stem is said to be drilled in a/the curve. Top secret process.

Re: Pickaxe, I think what Mr. Satou does is take from the Danish School the basic shape then adds a twist but in all truth I've seen this done by the Danish carvers as well so he may have simply emulated a design he really liked, I know I like what he did! :D
