Yeah, I love the systems, and while I use a couple of mini cobs at the office (smoke breaks) I much prefer the Systems, I was looking at the 51, but would you guys know what the smallest System pipe is?

A Peterson 31? I have a straight and a full-bent Peterson System 31 that are both pretty small

(http://thepetersonpipeproject.blogspot.co.uk/2007/07/review-peterson-straight-systems-pipe.html for the straight). They're both great smokers - the bent is my oldest pipe, the straight is a superb flake pipe.

Wait, you have a full bent System 31? I thought they were straight?
Yeah, it's probably going to be my outdoor pipe I prefer the bents, but they are more conspicuous and tend to attract way too many remarks for my liking.

From the link above:
The chamber depth on the '31' is certainly a bit smaller if not the smallest in the 'System' category, but for those fresh Virginia blends, or a real fresh aromatic with a lot of moisture, this pipe can really make the difference. The innovation was to drill out the shank and allow enough space for a longer threaded metal tube to be suspended within. With this design moisture cannot block the airway and cause gurgling, thereby leaving the smoke with a dry smooth quality.

There's a good drawing of the straight System pipe here: http://pipedia.org/wiki/A_closer_look_at_the_famous_Peterson_Standard_System_Pipe

The smallest of the bent System Standards is the 317. The 31 and 317 are the two smallest with the 31 being straight.

ok, thanks. Now I know what you mean by 'system'...I thought that might apply to a recently acquired Butz Choquin fully bent...and it does. The arrangement looks less complicated than the one shown on the Pipedia link to the Peterson system, but looks like it does basically the same job.

I know what you mean about the 31 being straight only and I agree, but the stamp on the full bent is System Standard 31. I'm at a wedding at the moment, but I'll post a pic when I get home.

Antisocial? Well, when I take a break from work and have a smoke, I'm just wanting a quick relax and refresh, and not in the mood to engage in conversation., not to mention a couple of instances of innuendo,
But yeah, I'd probably go for either the 31 or 317, if anyone has a side by side pic?

I read that the smallest is the 317 yet Im told the 314 is smaller. Peterson lists the 317 as 5.08 inches. I have a 317, until it clears its current listing anyway. It is a system pipe and smokes nicely to me. The

Here's the pics of my little bent Pete. I'm pretty sure it's a 314 - the Zippo gives some scale - but the stamp says System Standard 31.

Nice looking pipe. I'm thinking that someone at the Peterson factory must have been drinking some of that Irish Whisky before they blended it with the tobacco.
I suppose my choices would be more extensive if I didn't prefer Systems. I love both your Petes so I'm probably gonna go with the 31(4) as my "going to work pipe"
Now... to find one in ebony (I prefer the look).

Now that I think about it, I'd probably get both, have it delivered around Christmas time (so I can sneak some tobacco past overworked customs) who might only see the pipes.
