Hi Friends. A belated Happy New Year to you. I have recently found that my favorite go-to pipes are my little MM Pony Express Cobs. The size, weight, etc. seem just perfect for me. I find it best to keep smokes to 20-30 minutes. I like the light weight, etc. I have also found that I prefer not to mess with filters.
Can you recommend any briars of similar size, maybe something with which you have had good experience? Sure, I intend to get out on the web and search a bit, but I thought you might be able to share some recommendations.
Peace,

Bill

Peterson Tankard, Rattray Blower's Daughter, Savinelli Minuto, Big Ben Pipo or Ranger to think of a few. I own the first three and they all are good smokers.

Not long ago, with the encouragement of Forums members, I bought a Group 1

Peterson Belgique rustic, a nifty little zulu. With it, I discovered that really small

pipes are not a novelty or toy but a great addition to the rack, for short smokes,

for extra strong tobacco, for "appetizer" or "dessert bowls" around smoking a

larger bowl pipe, as a pocket pipe, etc. etc. I haven't checked recently, but at the

time, Iwan Ries had an especially good deal on this pipe online. Also at Iwan Ries,

look at their house pipe compacts, under Iwan Ries Exclusives, and their Ewa

brand pipes. I have mostly Group 4 (medium sized) pipes, but enjoy my extra

large bowls and Group 6, etc. But the small pipes have a place and are most

appreciated.

Bill,
While not a briar, if you do like cobs our company (Old Dominion Pipe Co.) offers traditional bamboo stem cob pipes that feature smaller bowls. Our "Laughing King" pipe has more of a "barrel-shaped" bowl with a 9/16" dia. chamber. Our "Virginia Planter" has a slightly larger and more cylindrical shaped bowl (actual bowl shape does slightly vary due to the natural shape of the cob its made from) with a 5/8" dia. chamber. While obviously I could be considered somewhat bias, I've personally found both to be great smokers and typically find them good for a 20-30 minute smoke. We are a new sponsor here at Pipes Magazine this month so please feel free to check us out.
Sincerely,
Bob Savage

+1 to that. I bought two of the Old Dominion cobs last week, and they're everything Bob says. Great for a short smoke, with a remarkably fresh flavor.

For small pipes, you cannot go wrong with Sebastian Beo. He hand makes the pipes in St Claude Frances, and sells them through smokingpipes.com. I have a couple of his, and they are great little pipes. Definitely worth checking out!

Get yourself a "Virginia Planter" or "Laughing King" pipe from Old Dominion Pipe Company www.olddominionpipe.com
Corn cob pipes without that nasty plastic stem and repulsive filter (sorry MM) I had to editorialize just a tad for interest, you know I love you too.

Thanks gentlemen for taking the time to make some recommendations. I look forward to checking them out. The pictures above show some very nice looking pipes!
@ Bob Savage - I visited your website. Very nice. I read the, "Our Story," page, and I very much enjoyed it. I'll bet it was exciting to find the colonial era artifacts! Off topic, but I enjoy American history and am a weekly listener to the Thomas Jefferson Hour podcast, so the colonial era Virginia history really caught my attention.
I will definitely place an order at some point.
Peace,

Bill

Bill,
Thanks for the compliments on the website. My background, I have my B.A. in History and I've been a Civil War reenactor for the past 20 years so I enjoy American history as well. Yes, finding the colonial plantation site on our farm was definitely like hitting the lotto! Eventually, once all of the archeological work has been finished, we hope to open up the site to the public as well as set up a museum to house the artifacts. The colonial clay pipes we're finding are really fascinating. Once we get our cob pipes well established, my brother and I hope to expand into the manufacture of 18th century colonial clay pipes as well and our goal is to produce exact reproductions of some of the more unique clay pipes we've found at the site. That's still a ways off but is part of our long term goal of making Old Dominion Pipe Co. a manufacturer of 18th as well as 19th and early 20th century traditional smoking pipes.

I have a Peterson Belgique (My favorite pete)and a Kaywoodie Campus. I still prefer my Pony Express especially since I cut down the shank and replaced the plastic stem.

The mini ball pipes from Boswell are larger looking churchwarden in style, but have a very small bowl. Great smokers too!

Aristocob now has the Morgan which is wonderful, it's slightly smaller than the legend, but has the larger bowl diameter of their larger pipes like a Country Gentleman and a tiny bit to make it a nosewarmer. MM does not list it on their website yet.

The Morgan does look like it would be great - kind of a cob version of the Devil Anse. Thanks for the heads up.
