I am the fourth person to register for this event at the show. I have never tried this before, but it sounds like fun. The cost is $45 and you get the pipe below. Here is the site if you want more info

I've been in two. 3rd place in one, 1st in another. My advice. If they supply the pipe, get a good cherry going then slow light puffs to keep it lit. Slow and steady wins the race. As for packing, your own your own, I just stuff and go.

If you get to use your own pipe, pick one you know is a good burner. And holds all the tobacco given. It really comes down to minutes(sometimes seconds) between winning and losing.

Let is be known I was beat down tired once the competition was over. Maybe thats just me.
Good Luck!

Everyone who enters gets the same pipe, pictured above, a tamper, a piece of paper and the same amount of tobacco. The $45 covers all the supplies.

Neat! As all entrants get the same pipe and amount of tobacco, I assume they all get the same blend/brand as well? Otherwise some might suggest using a slow-burning flake

I lost to voorhees, but it was so much fun. I plan on doing it every opportunity, in fact, lets go, right now, light em up, LOL.

I would take any advice voorhees gives, he stuck in there like a champ. My problem is the adrenalin and over-thinking it. I had been practicing, but when you strike that match... it's on. I ended up going 20 some odd minutes, but when I saw that my fire was dying, I panicked and tamped, killing whatever fire I had left.

I may make it to Chicago, but I have to wait to see if some other business issues pan out. But, if I can, I will step up to the table on this. Plus, that's an neat little pipe for the money.

Generally the prizes are based on Donations that the UPCA receives prior to the contest. Usually there are several nice pipes in the prize pool. Last year they gave prizes to the top twenty finishers. I believe the winner gets an invitation to the world championship smoking contest which is usually held in Europe.
