An airway with a bowl at the end is what makes a pipe. But what makes one of your favorite brands one-of-a-kind, as a brand, not single pipes.
I'll take the first easy shot. What makes Peterson pipes distinct to themselves? Despite the various quality control complaints in recent years, and some quibbles with the systems pipes, I love my Petersons, all six or eight of them. I've been lucky and have had no complaints over the years.
Petersons are one-of-a-kind for several reasons. I think their design built around the substantive heft is a strong part of their charm. They combine solidity with buoyant and sometimes subtle curves that set off the handful of pipe, and finishes that speak of hard-wearing durability and strength. They make the pipe smoker feel strong and solid. Although some of us are not enamored of the P-Lip (I own one, which I like, but one is enough) the existence of that distinction gives the brand an extra identity. Despite some complaints, Petersons are difficult to resist.
Now would someone like to do the obvious (Dunhill, Castello, Redice, Savenelli, Chacom) and any less obvious brands that might be favorites?
