I just got a bunch of 3 star matches and man they really have kicked up my pipe enjoyment. They're not as easy to put out like the other matches I've tried so a slight breeze won't stop them. Still have the lighters for relights and extra windy conditions. But the improvement is massive it won't counter bad technique but it still helps.

The longer matches I use for cigars are pretty good. I believe there cedar wood but I'm not 100% sure on that. There around 4 inches long and seem to make lighting a pipe easier than the shorter matches.

I personally hate matches for lighting a pipe. I like them for lighting cigarettes but not for pipes.

you know.. I hate to be this guy.

There's an invention called a lighter. They work great and have been tested by smokers for at least a hundred years.
What?! Why wasn't that in the "beginning pipe smoking" sticky?!

Just kidding--I happen to like both. Was at Golden Gate Park today--zippo was the only way to go. In backyard at home, I will use matches to start the pipe most of the time, but after that, it's a kiribi that does the trick.

Zippo with a butane insert is the way to go for me. BTW, Don't let the "smoking police" (which is anyone that can't stand tobacco within 300 yards of them) catch you lighting a match in GG Park. It's a non-smoking park. I've had run-ins with people demanding I put out my pipe because it's going to make their 5 year old want to start smoking and it ruins the smell of mold coming from the pond........

Funny, I just got a box of swan vestas with a ken byron order and really like them. They hold up well in the wind and give a little more control when lighting. Just ordered a bunch more (and of course more tobacco while i was at it). Cant seem to find them anywhere else l.

I stopped using matches for these refillable flint matches.

I've wondered how well those work for a while. I almost got a free one years ago since one company that made them ran a promotion where they were just giving them away to the first several (totally forget how many) people who asked for them (oh you had to pay shipping which was less then five bucks).

yeah that's one of the best parts. They're way easier to control the light. It's almost impossible not to get a perfectly even light with matches. Still pretty easy with a lighter but with matches it's pretty much 100 percent of the time. And if you cup your hands around the top of the bowl it's amazing the amount of wind that won't put out the match.
