Very well, it is my campfire pipe, a big mittfull of briar. It is not stamped XL, but weighs 103 grams. The pipe is 6 & 3/8" long with a 2" wide bowl. The stem and button are quite comfortable. I dropped it last year and snapped the stem off at the shank. I sent it back to David and he fitted a new stem.

I have a 2001 issue of The Pipesmokers Empheris. There is an article in there about David Jones and it shows all smooth, artisan shape pipes. It looks like all he does now is rusticated pipes, all pretty similar in style. I wonder why he stopped making smooth pipes? (I know he also makes guitars)

I actually ordered a pipe from him and asked him that very question. Turns out that he simply cant turn much of a profit by doing smooth pipes (because of the time and effort involved) the way he can with the rusticated ones with the way he sells on ebay. He is willing to do them on a commission basis though.

I have a couple of old (2000 era) issue of "The Pipe Smokers Empheris". There are several columns talking about newcomer David Jones and showing some pretty wild freehand, smooth pipes. I guess at some point, he decided to keep his prices lower.

I have a good one. No point in doing pictures, they all look about the same. It is a good smoker and a real bargain.
