So, “unknown” pipes can look great but be terrible smokers, right? This is an auction. 20FA788C-ADCB-40BB-95C7-2721E0DC44BA.jpeg946C0C44-3068-4ABC-914A-FB63B00279DC.jpegHmm…any thoughts here? It’s nice looking and if the price were right…(very low)? The best I can tell, a “DoppelKrone,” German for double down? - is a Czech made pipe.

This is not a pipe addicts anonymous meeting I guess. :) I think this is quite a handsome pipe. I wish I could find out more. I wonder if 2145/5 means someone made thousands of these? Seems unlikely. I wonder if there’s a way to make an educated guess about how a pipe like this may have been manufactured? I suppose it’s hard because local tobacco shops may have had pipes made just for them or something? We’ll, who knows…if it’s cheap enough then who cares.

Any pipe that you buy on line is a Question mark until you smoke it. Names guarantee nothing, just the odds that the one you're contemplating might be well made.

I own some of the finest pipes ever made, legendary names with high collector followings.

Big deal.

In my top 5 is a mid level Brebbia that I picked up on eBay for $2.

It’s a great point. I love this Viby pipe I picked up for 7$. It’s so well balanced in my hand and smokes great. Although, that is made as a second by a pretty famous artisan. But I bet big factories like Brebbia make solid products. We were talking about these cheap new Ropps on the market now. There’s one for 45$ I want. The only thing is the current global currency situation makes me hate to buy anything in dollars right at this moment.

brebbia maybe the most underrated brand.
In a pipe shop i just look at the pipe and price, no worry about brand. Only shop by brand because the way pipe sites are set up.

I agree that the brand of a pipe is meaningless as the main determiner for purchasing a pipe. It is a factor for me, but rather low on the scales.
The name is just a reputation. And even great names make meh pipes sometimes. I still miss my 1st cheap tyrolean it even came with a warning that was like this is going to smoke like crap we made it for display, that sucker smoked great. I bought another one later and it smoked worse then something I could have fashioned out of dog droppings. A name only indicates so much. The real test is smoking the thing. I say go with your gut.
