I noticed on YouTube that Simon on his “London Calling“ pipe channel uses a.n inexpensive short stem Clipper refillable lighter to prevent rim burns. Our local vape shop had a few, but they were in psychedelic colors or decorated with cannabis leafs, which is not my vibe at this age. So I went on line and found some in solid colors.

They work great to light a tobacco pipe without torching the rim of the bowl. Plus, they fit nicely in your pocket and if you lose or misplace it, no big deal.

Charring the ream is an user malfunction. It's not the lighter's fault. Providing you don't used WWII M2 flamethrower.
Yep, as long as you keep drawing while pulling the flame away from the pipe, it'll never touch the rim.

Yeah I got a 5 pack in normal highlighter colors from Amazon. They work great and help keep the flame away from my thumb. Rim charring can still be an issue but like the other guys have said, that’s user error using any lighter.

As a curiosity, Clipper is a Spanish brand very dear to potheads here. The stick where the flint goes is used to press the tobacco once you roll a blunt. Not that I did it when I was younger, a friend of a friend just told me.

Older models had an adjustable flame that went from candlelight to flamethrower and are a collector's item. I have three or four and they work like a dream.

I really like those Clipper lighters. Bought a pack of 12 or so from Amazon. Looking back, I should've bought the mini tube version. Still a great lighter.

I mostly use matches nowadays because the flame temperature is lower (re: charing), but clippers are my go-to travel fire. I have a bunch of plastic ones, in the car, around the house etc., but love my stainless steel one. And not only refillable but you can also replace the flint and the stem with the sparking wheel when they crap out. I've tried so many expensive and fancy pipe lighters, but clippers are by far the best I've found in the value, reliability, and quality nexus. 20231030_063830.jpg
