Thanks for this guide! I'm sure many will find it useful and more pictures is more good!
In imgur you can also get the BBcode directly which you can simply paste in to your message text as it comes preformatted for forums:

There's also an imgur app for iOS, and I assume all other mobile platforms, which makes it easy to host pictures taken on your phone.

Photobucket is pretty terrible, but it has a huge legacy userbase. I notice 404s on a lot of images only a few months later however, so it's probably a bad idea to use online.

Another tip.

Since Imgur puts a limit on the number of images you can access on one account (they keep hosting everything you've posted, but old images eventually become inaccessible from your account unless you pay them), I like to copy all of the URL's to a text file that I keep with the images on my hard drive. That ensures you never lose the URL and when you want to post an image that you've already uploaded you don't have to log in (yes you can also just look at the URL of images that you've posted, but finding old threads can be hard, or impossible, or if you only posted half the images in a set then the rest won't be available from anywhere).
I'm a big fan on Imgur so I wouldn't even be horribly opposed to paying them, and if you're a light user this won't be a problem, but it can be a handy practice regardless.

All very helpful! I think I found why I had a problem before: If you upload two or more images, you'll create an album, and the two choices for links do not work here. If you then publish them, you can link to the image in a number of ways. Here is one via BBCode:
