I know most of you like me are Sherlock Holmes fans. While meandering the Internet I came across a well written piece about Sherlock and his pipe. Enjoy lads!

A wonderful read. Thanks for posting. I am among the legions who took up the pipe because of Holmes. A singular person to say the least.

Have to run out but added it to my reading list as well. Hopefully later tonight while enjoying some Peterson Sherlock Holmes tin!
Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for the post.
I am a fan, too. I am about halfway through Doyle's works, have noted the pipe usage with interest, and was disappointed when Holmes went to cigaretttes in "The Adventure of the Solitary Cyclist", which is his, if I count right, 27th short story, or 29th tale, if you count the first two novels.
I don't know if cigarettes will remain his smoke, but it's fun to keep reading a story now and then.

I'm sure you won't be too mad at me for the spoilers, tomsmithusa, but Holmes is an inveterate nicotine fiend, and as such he takes it in any form he can get it. Russ O. had an interesting theory about Holme's tobacco usage in THIS ARTICLE. Also don't forget that, at the time, smoking was considered healthy and tobacco "helped" with all manner of ailments. It was also a very social thing, nothing like it's demonization today.

@Jason... well there are several studies now that show nicotine to have a plethora of health benefits.

The problem really is cigarettes, they are filled with loads of chemicals that are horrible for you (including some that have highly addictive qualities) but the tobacco (to a point) is not necessarily bad for you.
@Irish... thanks for that, was a very nice read.

lordnoble Thank you, but whatever you wrote, I stopped reading at "spoiler". :) I had to put my hand over the computer but managed to avoid reading it!
Thank you, though, for something I am sure was well intended.
The paper was a little odd in referring to Holmes repeatedly as if he were a real person. I was thinking after several of those that the author had lost a little perspective. It was fun to read, though.
