She being my wife..She picked me up a pipe at a rummage sale.So far this sounds good but it really isn't.It's a cheap pipe with fills. Now I've smoked pipes with fills before. That was many years ago when I first started smoking though.Don't ask me why but I hate pipes that have fills.None of mine do.There's another problem. This pipe doesn't have a stem.I explained to her that a new stem would cost more than the pipe is worth.Since I appreciate what she did though I told her that I will hold on to the pipe just in case I run into a stem that will work.I don't expect that to happen. In fact I hope it doesn't.I just don't like pipes with fills..After all these years though she still thinks my pipe smoking is ok,and I still enjoy being with her.If she buys me another pipe though I hope she makes a better selection.

Hmmm, that's a tough one mate. I think I'd tell her "wow, thanks dear, I'll keep an eye out for a stem that may fit it." She will never know if you find one or not, or if you even ever smoke it.

What kind of pipe is it? It might be fitted with a molded vulcanite blank, which will smoke just fine if properly prepped. Might make the wife happy to know you smoke a pipe she found for ya.

That is truly fantastic that your wife bought that for you. She sounds like a great gal. Best of luck to you if you decide to find a stem for it.

nsfishser is right; diplomacy is required in this situation. My gift pipes, nearly all from my wife, are some of my favorites, but

none have fills. My two pipes with fills I bought, in unfinished briar; the fills are really minor; they smoke perfectly. You really

don't like the pipe, so I wouldn't try to restore it. However, I'd make much of the gesture, how pleased you are. Maybe next

time, she'll pick out something you'd like to own. Give her some ideas about what's good, within her likely price range, but

not right before Christmas or your birthday -- too obvious. My wife came up with the idea for a churchwarden, something I'd

written off, and I love it. Most spouses like to give a really pleasing gift.

+1 ejames I know we have been down this road before and last time you hoodoo voodooed me lol, but you are right it is tricky sometimes, but sometimes you luck out. The vulcanite blanks are a a pretty good way to go to get it fixed up. When I need to fit one, I stick the stem on a long drill bit and spin it like lathe using sandpaper till I get the size I need. It doesn't take too terribly long and as long as you are careful and take it slow once you start getting close to the right fit. They make all kinds of different sizes and style it should be to hard to find one that will work for your purpose, it will just take a bit of work to get it fit and shiny.
I still have that doll and a bunch of needles!! With the interest you have in pipe making you really should invest in a tenon turner. I know-they ain't cheap but it not only turns the tenon,it will face the end of the stem for a flush fit against the shank- no gaps. Not needed for some stem types but for those that require a flush fit it is the way to go. And you can use it in your drill!

After 43 years, my wife knows what I like (kind of). She bought my Kildare 999 when I said I liked the Shannon 999 (which are hard to find). Turns out I love this pipe even though it wasn't what I really wanted. Just goes to show mama knows best (sometimes).
Give your wife an A for effort and be glad she tried. Like NSFisher's idea on the stem.

"She bought me a pipe." is not a phrase many guys get to utter. I would smile and nod and let her know how much you appreciate her thinking of you. Fix it, shelf it, who cares...everyone is happy and your woman bought you a pipe. Now call her in to look at pipes you like on the internet every now and then. Next time she might knock one out of the park.

I hope she doesn't read this. It might hurt her feelings. You're lucky she likes your pipes and wanted to get you something. It sounds like a huge gesture of love to me.
