My biggest pet peeve since becoming a moderator, is people saying "Google it". I understand we get a lot of the same questions, but as the boss @admin has preferred, we now go through and try to close threads over a year old. Brings new conversations with new ideas to the forefront. Just because some of us might know the answer, and have answered it a thousand times, new smokers never have heard it.

I wish people would include links more often as well. Like " did you try pipedia?" Like what the hell is a pipedia?

Long story short, it's however you feel up to answering at the time really. And sometimes I don't answer threads that would ruin my secrets. All depends on the day!

Guess the meds are kicking in.

Rant over.

Sometimes my inner teacher emerges and I try to give a short course, with emphasis on short.

Other times I take it upon myself to answer just a selective part of the question, giving a thread or two to pull on.

Other times I let others handle the subject rather than repeat my oft repeated boiler plate. "Your tastes will change."

If I can insert a new idea for the rest of the readership, I'll do that.

I try to do my part and leave the rest to the other hundreds of members here.

Ive been around pipe forums long enough to have seen the knowledge and advice that is passed actually change over time.

I think the more we answer newbie questions and the more info we pass amongst ourselves, the more we collectively change and adapt our pipe knowledge to new ideas. Fifteen years ago, I would've never even considered flushing a pipe with water (good God, man...) but now it's a commonly accepted part of our folkloric pipe knowledge which we pass on to newbies.

All this to say, that I believe the more we info dump, and the more people participate in dumping info, the better this whole thing becomes for all of us. A newbie might be overwhelmed, but it's not just the creator of a post reading the answers.

Making a newbie jump through hoops just because they need help is just petty.

Trial and error. Realizing how little effort there is to pipe smoking is something that can't be taught.
Yeah, this right here. There are so many nuances to discuss about every aspect of smoking a pipe, it's endlessly dissected and gone over but at the end of the day, you just stuff tobacco in the thing and smoke it, and if you're enjoying it you're doing it right. It took me a few years to realize this exact point...

I'm still fairly new being in it for just over a year now. So in my still fairly new opinion giving lot's of information, at least for me, was helpful and appreciated. It's an easy hobby to give up on considering tongue bite, relights, and not all tactics work for everyone. I want to see the pipe live on. I think if you are exhausted answering the same questions over and over thats understandable, just don't answer it, let someone else. The community is great, but its not big enough.

Sometimes on this forum it becomes like the internet in general: What to believe!!
I’m with Chasing. Help when you can, but urge the newbies to just experiment. With so many variables involved, trial and error is best.

I was brought up to respect someone who asks for help and to help them if possible.
That said, I have answered the breathsmoking question ad nauseum so many times, that I don't mind setting back and seeing if someone else can step up to the plate. If they can't or if I need to elaborate, I will.

However, if someone wants to start smoking, I will not buy their pipe or tobacco. That is on them.

Alex. who is Darrell McCall?

Also, in the link that you posted, Mr. Young bears a resemblance to Bobby Darin.
Darrell McCall recorded Lonely River Rhine in 1960, a follow up song to Fraulien, written by Betty Sue Perry. The Bobby Helms version was a crossover hit, much more famous.

Faron Young had Darrel McCall and Johnny Paycheck in his band, the Deputies.

The proof is even an unknown and unheard of singer like Darrel McCall from the golden era of country is more talented than the current crop.:)
