The Savinelli 9004 arrived today bringing my yachtsman collection up to a seven day set.

The 9004 arrived in very good shape considering its age.

The number stamp is very clear. No photo of the stamp was shown on eBay.

Removed a lot of cake with a pen knife. Couldn't get my finger into the bowl when it first arrived and will finish it with an alcohol soak and sandpaper.

The stem is fairly oxidized and brown, so some sanding will be in order.

Looking at the slot, I noticed it was a bit crooked. With the rarity of the 9004, I can look over it.

Got some work done on the stem with a magic eraser in a sink full of water. The sink now has a yellow ring that I need to clean. 8O

Yes, what a set! Good work.
Is the slight flair on the bottom of the stummel necessary for a yachtsman? I thought zulu and yachtsman were synonymous, but now wonder.

Other than a handful of my pipes, and my commissioned pieces, the 904s may replace my entire herd. 8O

Haha! You've got it bad
Yep. Can't believe it took as long as it did. My youngest daughter picked out my alligator several years ago, and the 904 bug just recently hit.

Here
Very nice.
I especially like the dark, smooth one at the bottom of the family photo.
The one above it appears to be a bit of an outlier, with the smooth stem and silver embellishment.
Having so many identically shaped pipes, have you noticed any remarkable differences in smoking results that may be due to other characteristics, like material or finish?

Surprisingly, no. Then again, been a pipe smoker for nearly three decades, so small differences may pass unnoticed. All have conical bowls, and their prime purpose for me is to fold and stuff flakes.

Getting there! Hopefully I will be done when my Speakeasy Navy Flake gets here. Want that to be the inaugural smoke!

Some would say the pipes Zulu, yachtsman, and horn are synonymous, but to my eye, the point at the heal says yachtsman, the flowing curve from bowl to bit says horn, and the loose open "s" curve says Zulu. I love all three, but am partial to the yachtsman.

Good on you, Duane! It's a lovely set.
Thanks, Jim. Out of all of the wild custom pieces and freehands I have, who would have thought I would fall completely in love with such a classic and elegant shape? :D
