I have been chatting with one of my favourite carvers about a seven day set.
However, I need some sort of unifying theme that ties them all together, and to that end I want your ideas.
The carver had his own thematic suggestions (which I may reveal during the course of this thread), but for now I want to solicit your input on ways to tie together a 7 seven day set.

Peck,

We're it me I would want probably 2 group 1 or 2 size pipes, an eye opener for a morning smoke and one for a before bed smoke probably an acorn and a billiard. I don't like full bents so I'd opt for 1/8 or 1/4 bent maybe plateau topped and smooth bowl Danish style. A straight perhaps a pencil shank Canadian rusticated or a Lovat smooth with plateau under the bowl. A pocket pipe, or nose warmer, and a pimped out one with ivory, silver or black palm adornment for a night out on the town. There you go all over the place. ;)

There are so many possibilities. The same shape in different textures and finishes. Different styles same finish. For me the unifying element has always been the maker. Over the years I put together several 7 day sets, all of the same maker, same style in the various finishes that were offered. But I have also seen a number of beautiful sets with different styles in the same finish. That is a difficult task if the pipes are to be smooth. I'm told that only about 5% of all blanks come out flawless. Matching up seven smooth pipes of different styles with good grain and a flawless surface in the same finish would truly be an amazing accomplishment. But you might well be dead before it's achieved.

Interesting thoughts guys.
I can tell you one thing I have ruled out.
A seven day set of table pipes?
I think not. Not my style.

Since you showed the old BBB catalog,

I'd opt for a set of 7 shapes from their old charts.
You could call 'em PBB,

or DBB!

:)

Seven separate styles but same finish/colour and the same stem material, band or rings etc. All the same but different.
Exactly what I was thinking.
One other option along those lines would be 7 exact same shapes, but different stems/finishes.

Now that's a tough one, so many different ways to do this.

I'm thinking 7 different shapes all with the same finish and ornate silver bands and numbered in sequence.

Sounds fun (and expensive)!
I would have the inside bowl specs identical and the draft hole identical. Material as closely matched as possible. The silver band idea is a must. Numbered, symbol, special word, etc.
Maybe go from strait to full bent, or smooth to full rustication, Zulu taper to volcano?
I would want them to be identifiable as a set but all individual.

Care to share the name of the chosen carver?
The carver is the same shit disturber who sent me the pics above to get a rise out of me. I believe you can read part of his business card inserted in one of the books.

Do you have an absolute favorite shape? Maybe 7 identical in shape but one banded, one Cumberland and so on?

7 different shapes made of the same materials, with Sunday being a big full bent. I'd say go with what size you enjoy using the most for the rest, but you definitely want a Rhodesian, a bulldog, a billiard, some straight some quarter bent etc.. Definitely silver bands or gold with possibly the days abbreviation etched on the band.

Well shit man,

that presents a problem on my part.
I'd give him free reign to conjure whatever Merlinesque magicks which may come forth,

I mean,

whatever the set turns out to be,

it's a damn fact that it'll be an absolute SLAYER!
I'll just be on stand-by awaiting what your original idea was,

and then,

wait to see the pix,

then

throb a throbbing gob lobbing upon my keyboard!

LOL

Seriously,

you can't go wrong with whatever you ask for.
The Man can do no wrong in my book.
He stands aloft on a mountaintop above all others.
Nobody can touch him.
That's a damn fact.
:puffy:

I think Mister lowercase makes a good point, if you're choosing a carver you should give him a lot of reign over what he does, give him minor guidance to color preferences and the likes but let him do his thing if he's excellent.

I have a month pipe set but I just don't seem to use them for the days their intended for.
