Seeking Info on a UK Estate Pipe

I recently purchased this estate pipe at my local tobacconist shop. It has a fairly large bowl and a long oval shaped stem. The only visible engravings are "SPECIAL" , "ENGLAND" and the number "409 DC". It is light as a feather despite its size and is one of my best smokers. Does anyone have any ideas about the pipe's maker or history? I'm thinking it could be a GBD Lumberman based on these clues.

Definitely has a Charatan "feel" about it. Specials were on the lower end from the stand-point of whom actually carved it. My understanding is that apprentices made the 'specials & the sandblasts. I am in agreement with Mike in so far as Charatan was the only one making a DC bit which people tend to love or hate. Those that dislike the DC bits often refer to them as "Double Discomfort." lol

If it is stamped DC, that almost has to be a Charatan. The DC stamp could either mean Double-Comfort, as your pipe has or Dunill Chartan. Here's an interesting webpage on Charatan:

I have one Double-Comfort bit and would love another. I find the size and type of material to be the most comfortable and best feeling bit I own.

I find the Chartan and Comoys British pipes to be very interesting.

That pot shape bowl will smoke very nice I bet!
