I was in Spain this last Christmas. Among other things I discover that US is way better place in terms of local tobacconists. I visit several stores on several cities and surprisingly I didnt have any PAD attack. The little tobacco I carried in my pouch was running out so I need to buy some tobacco. I didnt have much choice. Maybe I badly used to Iwanries here in Chicago but all I could find was Blue Capstan, some SG varieties and some Peterson baccy. I got some University Flake among others and thus the topic of this little story.
I smoked it on a sunny day sitting in a bench in the park while having a nice conversation with my dad. I was using my cob that gave me those very nice results smoking Dunhill Flake and Solani's Aged Burley Flake (both fantastic) in my modest opinion. University flake was very plain and disappointing. I couldnt get any flavor out of it and I did not enjoy it much. So I spent the rest of my holidays smoking the left overs I had of the above mentioned flakes and some STM I had.

Well, time passed and those little flakes staid in my pouch for like a month and now I was cleaning up and decided to load my Jirsa and give it a second chance while doing some work. The experience has been very different now I m getting this very mild plum flavor, with some earthiness to it and even some chocolate like... The moment was different, this thing had been drying for a month, I m not smoking a cob... I not going to try to find an explanation cause smoking is just like that but I will definitely smoke the rest of this baccy if it keeps tasting like this. Recommended.

I took the chance to post some pics of my tinned tobacco. Some stuff is new some is getting old, some I am about to finish...

BTW, I have been looking for something like that Butera Royal Vintage but better. Any suggestions?

Just had some UF tonight. I like it, but it is not something I'll search high and low for. I will say it is satisfying and unique. Definately a solid three star smoke.

UF has been a mainstay for me for several years now...pretty much a daily smoke. IMO, it definitely benefits from aging and drying. Glad you gave it a second chance.

The St. james, Mortons and the Nightcap look tasty, maybe the Navy Flake (brain freeze) don't know much about the others. Read about some, but jesus keeping track of all is too much brain space.

University flake is a good smoke. Not as bold as Dunhill Flake, Old Dark Fired or MacBaren's Navy Flake. But if you want a subtler flake taste it is excellent.

:) There was no way to fold and stuff the dry flakes. I tried to cut them but they just fell apart. They smoked nicely nonetheless.

I like University flake, but unfortunately for me its one tobacco that I can't smoke inside if my girlfriend is at home as she thinks it stinks. As I only smoke my pipe indoors at the moment I can't justifying buying it. Funny enough she likes the smell of Mick Mcquaid when I think that university flake smells better. Both are very good smokes though.
