Good day everyone. New to pipe smoking and new to this forum. So. I was cleaning the stem of my pipe and like an idiot I must have got a bit carried away and I've scratched the bowl with my pipe cleaner. The scratches look rather innocuous but I've removed the carbon lining and have revealed the naked briar underneath. Should I just leave it or is there something I need to do to protect it?

I wouldn't worry to much about that just smoke it and it should fill up again eventually. If its really deep and it really bugs you i guess you can do a pipe mud patch ( cigar ashes mixed with spit/water to make a paste) it should dry up like cake.

chrisbush, I'd say no problem. Many pipe smokers prefer new pipes with no "treatment" to the bowls,

just letting smoking form the carbon layer. Any carbon removal you could do with a pipe cleaner is

unlikely to be significant enough to do any real damage. The carbon layer will renew itself. Don't smoke

it too furiously until you've gotten some of the layer back, but don't worry about it. New pipe smokers

tend to think pipes are more delicate than they are. If used properly and cleaned regularly, and if you

take care not to sit on them or otherwise stress the materials, they are tough.

Welcome to the forum!
If you're really concerned about the scratches, you may want to consider coating the inside of the bowl with a little honey (thicker, semi-crystallized works best). I always coat my new pipe bowls before smoking - it helps protect the wood and build up a nice, even cake. Let it dry a little and penetrate the wood before smoking again (maybe a day or two).
