I recently just won an auction for a really nice looking Poker Nosewarmer from pipe maker Scott Taylor which is shown below. I received this pipe yesterday and i was very impressed with the work on it, I mean I am no pipe critic by far but i think i have been at this long enough to catch the signs of a well made pipe.
First i checked the wood and finish and i found no signs of pits or blemishes in the stain nor muck ups in the rustication. Did the same for the stem work and the fit of the stem to the shank. All of this looks good.
Then i checked the draft hole and it was lined up perfectly to the bottom of the bowl, also a pipe cleaner went right through with no resistance at all. All of this was good.
All that is left is for me to light it up and smoke it which i will hopefully get a chance to go this weekend.
After seeing the pipe and inspecting it like most buying a new pipe from a new maker i wanted to know more about Scott. So i contacted him and he said he has been a hobbyist for years but just recently started to sell his pipes on the Bay and they are going for roughly 70-100$ a pipe this particular once i nabbed for around $80.00.

He has a website in the works ill post a link for you all to see right now though it just acts as a hub for all the bids he puts up.
Naturally i asked Scott if he knew about pipesmag and suggested him to join. still waiting on a reply but i guess we will know soon enough.

I like the mix of textures and the sturdy stem, though for my purposes, I like the fire and smoke

a little further from my face; I feel like I taste the leaf better.

I'm not familiar with Scott but I'm always on the lookout for a new American carver.
A few questions:
What's the length of the tenon?

What's the depth of the mortice?

These two measurements should be virtually identical.
In the overhead shot, it looks like the bowl is a little wider at the 11:00 to 2:00 positions. Is it drilled off center or is that just the way the photo looks?
Does he have a web site?

Sorry for the over exuberance, Smokey. I just love hearing about a new carver!

Big Van the Length and depth of both the tenon and mortise is 9/16" they are the same.
the top of the bowl is more round where as the bottom is not perfectly circular but it sits secure on a flat surface as in no wobble.

This pipe looks a lot like the pipe I just bought from Captainsousie. It was a 2008 Boswell that I haven't yet fired up. Quite a beauty.

I have seen his work on ebay and they look good. I was considering that exact one. I have been watching his pipes for a while but never bought. But every pipe of his that I have seen look carefully and skillfully done, of course that's just from the pictures.
I was going to ask the same question as bigvan. It sounds like the tenon will sit flush against the back of the mortise. I think you can learn a lot about a pipe maker just from this particular area of the pipe. I might have to pull the trigger on one of his pipes.
Thanks for sharing smokeybear.

Smoking some hobbits weed in this right now and I gotta say I am impressed with the quality of smoke I'm getting out of this little guy.
First 1min of smoking I was getting a faint taste of wood mixed in with my smoke but I assume that's because it still needs to break in and it has gone away now and tastes wonderful. The open draw on this pipe is giving me some of the thickest and creamiest smoke I've experienced with a very like pull. I'm smoking it really slow.
As far as smoking capabilities I can comfortably compared this to a David jones poker pipe.
Some notable flaws only in the shape of the pipe the chamber is still a bit off center and the general shaping of the bowl is also a bit off but the important parts the draft hole, Tenon and mortise are bang on.
I'd say that we have another great pipe maker in the works an I am happy with my purchase. I am greatly looking forward to what Scott has in store next.
