I have a plastic milk carton nearly full of little tins of fancy, expensive tobaccos, plus I have more stashed in my garage and office desks and in campers at my farm. Nothing makes a man feel more privileged than firing up a pipe with tobacco that costs as much as $8.50 an ounce retail.

For the last couple of days I’ve been enjoying some Dunhill Royal Yacht that I forget how old the tin is. It’s Made in Denmark so it’s not ancient.

But I’d appreciate some schooling on how to put a date to old tins of fancy tobacco.

I suppose I need to use a magic marker to date new tins, but I have a bunch of old ones, that I can’t figure out when they were made.

Any help would be much appreciated

Here’s a few of them:

I have had a lot of questions about how to date a Mac Baren tobacco. The picture below shows the production code which is on all pouches and tins, except form USA where we write the month and year.

You can read the code 33173241 like this: 33 is the machine no. which packed the tobacco, 17 is the last two digits in the year, 324 is the day no. of the year (this is about end of October) and 1 is the shift of the day.

I hope you can use this information for finding out when a tobacco is produces at Mac Baren

The picture is of the closing tape on pouches and you can find the code on the back side of the tins.

Please share this to the groups your in.

The Three Castles is pretty ancient as (a) they don't make the stuff anymore (b) it was distributed from an outfit called J. B. Russell that is long out of business and coincidently owned the War Horse trade mark that they allowed to expire in the early 80s if my memory is correct (c) the stuff is cigarette tobacco. Have you opened the tin? If you haven't then don't as its worth more sealed.

Outside the above mentioned dating methods, a few companies use Julian dating.

It will have some combination of three numbers;
The batch xx(xxx)
The day of the year yyy
The year zz(zz)

For instance 2717510 could be read as;
Batch #27
Produced 06/24/2010

Why don't companies just use 7/25/1989?

They like watching us squirm??
What would be the fun in making it easy for you? Actually, it's a pretty efficient way for a company to identify the source of the product it there's a problem. As for the consumer's need to know the date of manufacture, that's not really their concern.

It's a matter of what's the most cost effective method for printing the code.

Mac Baren is pretty easy in the states as mentioned above. Here's the Solent Mixture I received I few weeks ago dated APR 2012.
