I have a large plastic crate full of different tobaccos, and each day I’ll grab at random a bag and smoke it.

I smoke English tobaccos in bent pipes, usually larger ones, the standard pipes get aromatics.

Today Peter Stokkebye 201 Black Cavendish packaged April 6, 2021 came out winner.

My, oh my, this is a tasty, cotton candy flavored, mild, easy lighting, long burning mixture.

All day, whenever my wife got close she’d say things like “Smells like the county fair” or other such complements.

As I understand it, black cavendish might only be half tobacco, the other half sugars and flavorings and propylene glycol.

But no matter what brand it is, it has that sugary sweet candy taste and it smells like a cotton candy stand.

Can somebody more schooled in black cavendish than I am school me as to the finer points of how they make a smokable candy bar?

I’m curious, you know?

I think of black cav like grain alcohol in a blended whiskey.

It's made black usually with steam (cheaper) or some form of heat. Not always sweetened or flavored, but its like steaming veggies, makes them soft and mushy, takes the edge off the flavors.

The more water/heat/time you use when 'cavendish-ing' tobacco, the darker it goes. But as the Captain suggested, it seems more like you are referring to the flavoured stuff, which I would be making assumptions about...

Be careful with it since it can do a real number on your pipes. Better to have a dedicated one for it.

Fifty years ago when I picked up that first Missouri Meerschaum every grocery store had a large section devoted to pipe tobacco, and I don’t remember any of it being straight l, black cavendish. Back then pipe tobacco often was labeled as a “smoking mixture”.

Today you go in the grimy little cheap booze and smoke shops and cavendish is everywhere, in a bunch of flavors, all labeled as “pipe tobacco”, probably for tax reasons. But there’s always a bag of Black Cavendish for sale now, and no matter the brand it’s a super sugary sweet, wet, gooey, wonderful tasting “smoking mixture”.

It would goo up my pipe bowl, if I didn’t clean them religiously, as I do.

Awhile back I bought a microwave cheeseburger in a convenience store, and the contents label listed a lot of things besides beef, bread, and cheese. I couldn’t pronounce most of them.

It would be fortunate if the Smoker’s Pride Black Cavendish I like a lot, is half tobacco, the rest “other ingredients and flavorings”.

No matter.

It tastes like smoking a waffle cone, and produces huge clouds of fragrant, sugary smoke.

Maybe it’s best to not inquire how they make it, you know?
