I mean sure the guy might be insane, he does have a set of meer "cigar holders" up for $4000, so while I lean toward him being out of his mind maybe I'm wrong and can learn something new here. This 1980s pipe can be yours for a mear $3,600 or is that meer...

Bauer is an Austrian name whose pipes where made in Turkey. You can have a very nice calabash pipe with much less money. Through very nice , that calabash is very overpriced.

Andreas Bauer is one of those grand old names, going back to the first decade of the 20th century, that represented the very finest quality of meerschaum pipe manufacture. They used only the choicest grade of meerschaum, won awards for their designs, and their hand carved and hand assembled pipes were seen by aficionados as being in a class of their own. There was Bauer, and then there was everyone else. Vienna was a major center for the meerschaum trade at that time, much as London was for briar.

The older pieces are much in demand.

I own a few Bauers and certainly didn't pay anything like the delusional price being quoted for this set. Good pipes!

Ok so what i thought, really nice pipe, insane price. Could be that he's banking on (no pun intended) that someone from the far East will see a nice pipe that is expensive and make an offer of 2000 or something that's still silly and it will get accepted.

From 1980 and the stem doesn't fit the box? The Amber stand is cool I guess but... jeez.
It isn't amber - the AB pipes with yellowish stems are just using very nice swirly acrylic.

The pipe in the OP's thread is exactly what I was digging around to find answers for: an acrylic Andreas Bauer stem that doesn't fit the box.

So my question - Do these acrylic stems begin straightening out with age? Sounds odd, but all the ones I'm finding examples of have stems like the OP's. Here are a few (mine at top - you can see the indentation to the right of the stem, where it would have sat when it was younger.

Also, the AB pipes with black stems don't have this problem - does that mean they are made from a different kind of acrylic than the yellow ones?

Well, I will follow up with an answer to my own question. I spoke with a couple of pipe-makers last night and they weren't surprised that the stems straightened, although no ideas as to why the black ones don't.

So, I'll just straighten it and begin smoking :)

I just did the heat gun on the stem. The stem began straightening out very quickly and did not respond as quickly to cold water locking it in place. But it was quick and easy - much moreso than vulcanite and no smells to speak of.
