So today, on my way to work, I needed to stop by the cleaners and noticed across the street a place named "Saylor's Cigars and Gifts" in Manassas, VA. I decided to stop in and was surprised to find what might be the worst smoking establishment I've ever seen.
The first words out of the counter attendant's mouth were "Is there something you want?" I responded that I was interested in their selection of pipes and tobaccos, to which she pointed into the corner. In the corner I found a few glass jars of stale lane blends, and a few tins with prices written on them with black magic marker (twice the online price), and NO pipes.
As I glanced around I noticed that the entire room IS THE HUMIDOR...which makes for a humid, dusty, and rancid environment overall. I also was informed there was a $10.00 minimum purchase in order to smoke in the lounge area.
I drifted out quietly without spending a nickel, and won't be back...

The entire room is normally the humidor in good cigar shops, where I live it's no more humid than the outdoors and it is also where people smoke in my favorite shop. But they do have 40 premium pipe blends now and some higher end pipes, which is awesome. A couple years ago Cigarette City actually had like 6 premium pipe blends that had tons of dust on them and their "pipes" were little meerschaum minis that looked like weed pipes, they have come a long way.

I've been in some very high end shops in the Metropolitan DC Area (Georgetown Tobacco, John B. Hayes, Fader's etc...), and though some use a series cabinets in their main area, this was cigars and accessories all in the open air, which I have not seen. I simply can't see how they keep it clean with smoke, dust, and humidity sticking to everything...and at this place they didn't.

Good ones like Faders (I love them) have expensive air filtration systems in place. Cigarette City has it all open too in a giant humidor that they smoke in, it's all fine, they also have a good system in place for filtering. If you can't smell a cigarette smell when you walk in (or mold, gasp) it should be fine.

Old Virginia Tobacco at Manassas Mall probably has the best selection of pipes and pipe tobacco in Manassas and that's not saying much. It is totally worth the drive to Fair Oaks mall and the JB Hayes there. :puffy:

I agree that JBH is the place to be. I went to there their Winchester location once, and was a little let down, the mall is def. where they have the most.
