The Savinelli 320. I've a bit to say about the 320, but I'll do my best to keep it short. I remember a number of years ago it seemed that the pipe was all the rage on the forums as well as the Facebook groups. The Savinelli 320 was the best dang smoking pipe on earth... probably outside the planet too, the way people talked. I was intrigued of course, but if it wasn't the ugliest pipe shape in existence, I don't know what was. Looked like an obese slug... ewww. Maybe aesthetics isn't everything, but a pipe's look is important to me. And the fact that the Sav 320 looked like the birth of a bouncing baby Jabba The Hutt was a bit of a turn off for me!

But the 320 was apparently "magical" in its smoking properties. I even opened a thread here asking that very question... Is the Savinelli 320 A Magic Pipe? I honestly wanted to know by this point and was intrigued enough to consider purchasing one, inexpensively of course, just to see for myself if the hype was justified.

And so, eventually, after putting it off multiple times in favor of other pipes, I did just that.

I remember first opening a box and holding the pipe in my hand. It felt comfortable in hand. Very comfortable actually. And turning it over and over and around and around I realized the shape wasn't ugly at all. It's quite nice actually. It's just very weirdly extremely un-photogenic.

Ok, but how does a 320 smoke?

I don't remember the first blend I loaded that pipe up with, but I do recall I was blown away by how well it smoked, and the flavors I was experiencing. And every blend I smoked in that pipe gave me the same result. Huh... who'd have thought?

It turned out the Savinelli 320 was a magic pipe after all.

I've since added a few more to my collection, and every single one regardless of price has given me the same results, and it's become one of my favorite pipe shapes. It's been awhile since I purchased one, but this one popped up on Smokingpipes, and being a bit more trained to see the un-photogenic pipe for what it truly is, I had to ask myself, "Do I want another magic 320?" And the answer to that is a great big Jabba sized yes! So I just pulled the trigger on this.

I probably need another 320 like I need another hole in my head*, but I’m tempted to get one of these just for the Lagavulin-like packaging.

*There are still some 320 pipes I’m looking for: the Panama, with aluminum rim cap, and a Giubileo d’Oro (I bought one awhile back, but returned it because it had a scuff on the finish—what’s the point of getting a high grade pipe with a flawed finish?) I was almost tempted to get the new Dune, but the rustication looks too much like that ugly Peterson rustication that looks like someone used a drill to gouge the pipe all over to torture it.

I'm tempted to get the Dune despite that rustication just to see how it patinas naturally. My Noce has colored nicely and looks fantastic!

I have not smoked one, but I did do a restoration and refinish on one of the unfinished 320s for a friend once. The stem was way too wide for my liking. Maybe the way my crooked teeth are, but I couldn't clench it at all.

Anthony, that one you scored is gorgeous though! I love my Punto Oros.

I have mixed feelings about the shape too but as time goes by and I see more of them it might be starting to grow on me. The chamber diameter is a little larger at 23mm than I typically like. Time will tell.

If the chamber size is what is holding you back, you can always try the smaller 321—it’s essentially the same shape, but scaled down.

The chamber diameter on these is what sold me on the idea that you get more flavor from complex blends such as Balkans and Englishes in a wider chamber. I don't always smoke those blends in a 320 because I have so many other pipes I enjoy, but if it's a blend I've not tried before then I usually do.

I love the 320! My wife gave me a smooth Dolomiti 320 for Christmas a couple years back, and I think I’ve run more tobacco through that thing than any other pipe I own.

The only downside is that I don’t often reach for it when I want a slow-burning Virginia; if I load it in a 320, that smoke will take 2+ hours.

Only 320 I have is a Rossi. Love the shape and probably my favorite author rendition. Only downside as a smoker is that I can't even get a tapered pipe cleaner very far into the stem and the stem won't come out without a freezer treatment. Also tends to start getting wet a little sooner into the smoke than many of the pipes I use.

That's a great looking 320. I had one years ago, and it was a great smoking pipe, and smoked English blends wonderfully. I sold it though along with a few others to pick up a couple new meerschaum pipes. I may buy another 320 in the future, but my pipe collection is good at the moment. Enjoy the new pipe. May it bring you many happy smokes.

Great looking pipe...I actually like the 320 shape a lot.

The only Sav I still own is the very first pipe I ever bought...a Hercules panel billiard...bought it from Frenchy's Pipes.

I smoke meers 95% of the time now, but I still smoke the Hercules occasionally. I keep telling myself I'm done buying pipes, but if I ever get another Sav it would definitely be a 320.
