The Savinelli 320. I've a bit to say about the 320, but I'll do my best to keep it short. I remember a number of years ago it seemed that the pipe was all the rage on the forums as well as the Facebook groups. The Savinelli 320 was the best dang smoking pipe on earth... probably outside the planet too, the way people talked. I was intrigued of course, but if it wasn't the ugliest pipe shape in existence, I don't know what was. Looked like an obese slug... ewww. Maybe aesthetics isn't everything, but a pipe's look is important to me. And the fact that the Sav 320 looked like the birth of a bouncing baby Jabba The Hutt was a bit of a turn off for me!
But the 320 was apparently "magical" in its smoking properties. I even opened a thread here asking that very question... Is the Savinelli 320 A Magic Pipe? I honestly wanted to know by this point and was intrigued enough to consider purchasing one, inexpensively of course, just to see for myself if the hype was justified.
And so, eventually, after putting it off multiple times in favor of other pipes, I did just that.
I remember first opening a box and holding the pipe in my hand. It felt comfortable in hand. Very comfortable actually. And turning it over and over and around and around I realized the shape wasn't ugly at all. It's quite nice actually. It's just very weirdly extremely un-photogenic.
Ok, but how does a 320 smoke?
I don't remember the first blend I loaded that pipe up with, but I do recall I was blown away by how well it smoked, and the flavors I was experiencing. And every blend I smoked in that pipe gave me the same result. Huh... who'd have thought?
It turned out the Savinelli 320 was a magic pipe after all.
I've since added a few more to my collection, and every single one regardless of price has given me the same results, and it's become one of my favorite pipe shapes. It's been awhile since I purchased one, but this one popped up on Smokingpipes, and being a bit more trained to see the un-photogenic pipe for what it truly is, I had to ask myself, "Do I want another magic 320?" And the answer to that is a great big Jabba sized yes! So I just pulled the trigger on this.
My new Savinelli Whisky 320.
