Anyone have information on the “Dry” line of pipes? As near as I can tell it just accepts a 6mm balsa filter, but so do many others. What’s the deal with this design?

They came out in the early ’80s (probably 1981 or so) and do use a balsa filter and have a small trap that collects moisture. This Savinelli Punto Oro Oom Paul 2604 has a stem with a pseudo P-lip and moisture trap. I would say it’s kind of a blatant rip-off of a system pipe.

I had a Dry 904 that featured no well and had a fishtail stem. The only difference between it and any other filtered 904 was the "Dry" stamp.

That doesn’t surprise me. I have a 2320 (the Dry System version of the 320 Author with a slotted P-lip army mount stem), but the design is idiotic—there’s a curved well, but the pipe is drilled normally, centered in the shank; at least with the Oom Paul, the hole is to the side of the well, not right in the middle of it!

Suppose I’m fortunate I didn’t get one randomly stamped “Fart” or “Moist” or something worse.
True. This certainly highlights how astounding it is, what passes for "fortunate" in this day and age.

Edit: I need to put "fart emoji" in the suggestion box. Does anyone know where that box is? Serious answers only, please...

I have the Savinelli Dry System 2614KS (20mmx42mm chamber) --- its been one of my favorite pipes for over 40 years now... it can also take 6mm charcoal filters. An excellent smoker. I prefer the stem to the Peterson. It hangs better.

I thought they stopped using the 4 digit code in the 70s ??? That maybe a pre-New System Pipe or old system which did not have the moisture trap. ??? Just guessing,

By the way if you go to the Savinelli site they have instructions on how to smoke a pipe :

I should think though that the first step would be to put tobacco into it !! ;):ROFLMAO:

Savinelli started with four digit model numbers and switched to three digit numbers in the ’70s; the exceptions were the Nonpareil and Dry System pipes, which used four digit numbers.
