My favorite Savinelli pipe shape would have to be their 904. I have heard the shape called a forward canted dublin, a zulu, and even yachtsman. Savinelli's churchwarden stummel shapes are all easily recognizable as the companies trademark shapes, so here is my question. Has anyone ever seen a 904 churchwarden, or does anyone know if a pipe of this shape could be requested?

That is not a bad idea! Might contact Walker Briar Works about that one. Thanks!

Interesting. Here are some considerations. The classic churchwarden is fully arched, a full curve on the stem, although

of course some churchwarden's have only slightly curved stems or perfectly straight stems. If this briar were fitted with

a fully curved stem, the bowl would be canted far forward while smoking. It could be fine, or with steady smoking, it might

wear unevenly with more heat on the upper side of the bowl. With a full curved pipe, usually the stem angles up more steeply

to meet the down-curve of the stem. You have all kinds of choices, but think about it so you will get exactly what you want.

The 904 is a beautiful pipe; I'd smoke it as is, but that's just me.

I do love that pipe. Would really enjoy finding a 904 churchwarden though. The 904 in the pic was a pipe that I shared a bowl of Old Dark fired with my dad the last time that I talked to him before he passed away. No way in the world would I do anything to damage it. Just thought the unique 904 shape would lend itself nicely to the graceful churchwarden curve.

In your situation, I'd save and smoke your dad's pipe as it is and hope to buy an estate 904, or perhaps

eventually a new one, to be outfitted with a churchwarden stem. Since the stem is designed for an only

marginally bent stem, I'd go with a straight churchwarden stem or one only slightly bent. But I'd keep

your dad's pipe as is, since it has powerful significance for you. Once you have the churchwarden 904,

keep both stems. You may find you would get more use out of the shorter stemmed pipe. Alternately,

you might like the Savenelli 601 churchwarden (non-filter pipe) that appears in my avatar, an excellent

smoking pipe reasonably priced (less by $30+) than a new 904 (Oscar Lucite series). Your dad's 904 is

one of Sav's most distinctive and artful shapes, in my opinion.

Thanks for the advice. I love the 904 shape as well. Have often debated acquiring a side collection of nothing but 904's. :D

@Anthony Definitely worth looking into! Going to search and see if I can find one with a nice sandblast. Thank you very much!
