I am not new to pipes but I am new to collecting estate pipes. I came across this fella that is an Autograph grade 4 but it is a large freehand style that I have not been able to find any info on. It is 1970's or older I am assuming since the stem is pre-filter. (Is that right?)

The stem is a swirled olive color but I am assuming it is just discolored ebonite.

Anyone have any insight to what I have?

Given the lack of filter and the shape of the stem carving, I'd say you're right on the date. Danish style pipes were popular with carvers in other countries in the time frame. You're right on the stem being oxidized. Autographs, particularly older ones, seem to be very vulnerable to oxidation. The stem should clean up nicely without any major problem. Nice pick up, I'm sure you'll be very happy with it.

Here's an Autograph I did for forum member Weezel. Stems were vulcanite until 1982:

Thanks, stamped logo's are always a challenge and a compromise. (Upshall, Charatan, Savinelli, Peterson) I love working with old Comoys or Dunhill drilled logos (GBD too), they are much easier to work around.

I have three autographs from this era and, although too big for my tastes, produce a wonderful smoke. Autographs from this period are wonderful pipes, but have stems that are sometimes referred to as 10.00 dollar stems on a 300.00 pipe
