...at first I thought perhaps this was an infamous euro one dot, but then I saw the pat. # and fishtail sig and realized it had to be old, I guess?
It doesn't look old does it?
It's beautiful!
The 'specially selected" arched stamp is neat too.
The auction was ended early,

someone probably contacted him and offered like a million bucks or close to it...

...if it is an authentic early one dot, it truly is mighty fine.

The "specially selected" was Sasieni's highest grading. Joel Sasieni would personally pick these from the production line and the pipes thus chosen would get that stamp. It looks to be in really mint condition and could easily have fetched $1400.
Hopefully it's not a fake.

I watch a lot of Sasieni's including that one, but I have never seen a "Specially Selected" pipe. I suspect the offer was pretty high to end the auction. But perhaps not, the seller was definitely not a pipe-reseller. It never hurts to make an offer!

However, pipephil says the Specially Selected grade was reserved for pipe to receive the side-placed One Dot, which this pipe does not have.
Were Specially Selected pipes ever made with a top dot?

Thanks for the info, I never knew about the "specially selected" thing, that J.S. would personally select them is pretty cool I must say.
Pipephil.eu indicates 1919 - 1924 for top dots.

It looks like the same seller actually had another one up on the block and it actually went on bid...

...and it looks nearly brand new too.
I never knew about the 1979 limited edition where they used the old fish sig, like this one,

http://www.pipasibarita.com/en/excepcional-pipes-rarities/730-sasieni-8dot-specially-selected.html

...I wonder if these were from 1979 too?
Weird, tricky waters with Sasieni!

Hmmm, the question I would have, would be the shape numbers 49 and 13. Now I get the fact that this pipe, if old, would be before the Town Name designation, but the number 49 did not carry through. The number 13 was seen on later Sasieni pipes, consistently as the Haselmere shape, a small Dublin. The person who would know, because he has some very early Sasieni catalogs, is Tony Soderman. The other thing I would want clarified, is the Made in England mark. I would also as a buyer, want to see the stinger in the stem, the pipes being in the condition that they are in should have pristine stingers, yes?

Yes, that's how I usually see them. But you should also know that the stamping was revived in the 1980's along with the old fishtail logo for a commemorative edition by Sasieni. These, however, have no patent number and have 8 dot stems. I've seen a couple of these listed as old Sasieni pipes, which they're not.

I do love this place......
I've got a couple of Sasieni burners and, while on the low end side, they blow my 1926/27 DH out of the water.
Thank you MLC, Al and Sable.
The journey here really is the reward.

I have never seen a Sasieni with a stinger.
Here's a One Dot with stinger, sold by a guy in my area (Bard Vintage Briar)

The other thing of note, and it could just be the pictures, is the size of the dot, (and its perfect blue color) on the Specially Selected pipe, and the size of the dot of the pipe in Al's picture, which looks correct.
