I’m wondering whether anyone knows if RYO tobacco will keep for extended periods of time if kept sealed in the can? I’m thinking of stocking up a supply along side my pipe tobacco, but I can’t seem to find any info anywhere on whether anyone has kept this type of tobacco for years at a time.
Any info?? Cheers!

I can't think of a RYO that comes in tins off hand, but could be mistaken.

If talking about coffee can style tins/cans, it should be fine (like a 7 ounce of Half and Half).

I keep some pipe tobacco in an old tin for travel purposes
The tobacco dries out relatively fast.

@Eastmon As a former RYO smoker I had never any problems with the Drum sealed tins. I am sure that I smoked some tins after 2 or even 3 years without a problem. On the other hand, the pouches dry fairly quickly. So, if the tin is sealed you should have no problems.

If the RYO tins are of that metal foil/cardboard wall construction, I’d jar them. Those tins are supposedly only good for 5-7 years. A lot of OTC pipe tobacco is packaged that way too. And SPC. I either jar or Mylar them when I’ve received them.

Some of the older tins will keep for ever - this one is a James Russell tin of Three Castles but I have had cutter top tins from the 30's and the 1950's of Three Castles which have all been wonderful. The only trouble being that the golden strands of the stuff turn dark brown very quickly after opening. I love this as well as Nut Brown as they were both tobaccos smoked by my Uncles from like 1914 until the day they pegged it in the mid 1980s. When I occasionally crack open a tin and roll up a gasper I always think about them. I was lucky enough to get this tin from a forum member here the other year and it is being kept for a special occasion.
