Kinda a tough question. I think they can outlast the piper if cared for. But I enjoy the pipe less often than most...I'm not an every day smoker.

Still there are too many variables. Salt and alcohol cleaning good or bad. Water wash good or bad. Freight train smokers vs slow ones (not cognitive there folks). Those who don't rest a pipe and those who do. Folks who clean the pipe regularly and not. Seriously. Some pipes may have better wood and construction. There's no science. It's a pipe. Care for it and it'll last longer. Same as us.
