The day before Thanksgiving 1976 brought an ice storm to the Kansas City metro area and I’d wrecked my third car, the Trailways busses didn’t run, and my friend from Humansville Mark Miller and I tried going South and got as far as Grandview when he spun out and we retreated back to the dormitory.

My mother had Thanksgiving planned and I called her, and said Mama, I just can’t make it.

Within a few minutes, her sister, my Aunt Mildred called and said Uncle Ben was coming back from his trucking run to St. Joseph and he’d be glad to stop by the dorm and drive me home.

His green 1970 Chevy truck pulled up to the dorm and off we traveled, headed East on I-70 past the ice, then South on 13 to home.

I’d bought a Grabow filter pipe and a pouch of Half and Half and I discovered three things that long ago night.

First, a man who drives a semi for a living is a lot better driver than the rest of us can ever be.

Second, grown ups drink their coffee black by the thermos full. Coffee is the elixir of life as we know it, and spices up stories of invading France with Patton’s Third Army, and is indispensable to life in America.

And Grabow filter pipes really do allow a beginner (or anybody experienced as well) to have a cool, dry and sweet smoke without tongue bite, and smoke a pouch of Half and Half and enjoy it.

In a world where too many things change, good family, good coffee, and good Dr Grabow filter pipes stay constant and true.

Another well worded story brought to us by the one and only Mr. Briar Lee.

I’ve passed up the opportunity to buy a Dr. Grabow pipe too many times at quite a few of the B&M shops Ive visited. Most places are vape and head shops nowadays and don’t have much in the way of real tobacco pipes or tobacco. But most will have at least a few Brands of codger pouch tobacco and a few Dr. Grabow pipes somewhere in the store. I guess I’ll have to buy one just so I can try one out. I don’t use filters or anything but I guess it’s time to try. I still get tongue bite from the little bit of Half and half I have left. Maybe a Dr. Grabow will actually help. Thanks for the post my friend. 💯🙂🍻

The UK equivalent is Dr Plumb, inexpensive but decent pipes you can get along with - wrecked my last one so badly, it finally went in the bin, but it was the textbook codger pipe.

Apparently, the story goes, Plumb was the name of the firm's secretary and it was only through his efforts "doctoring the ledgers" that the firm survived. Started by the GBD France sales manager in 1925, their pipes are now made by Cadogan.

I love my Grabow. My first pipe I ever bought in the late 90s was a Grabow. Bought a pouch of Capt Black with it too. Wish I still had it but I eventually lost it as it was the first of the several attempts over the decades trying to get into pipe smoking. Oh well.

I don't see myself ever spending money on a Grabow, ever again.

However, I owe my pipe smoking career to a Dr grabow. And I'll suggest a Grabow to anyone who's interested in starting.

Agreed. Many Doc Grabow pipes are indeed the pits. However - ones made in the 40s and 50s seem to have some style and craftsmanship to them. My Royalton Bulldog is good enough for government work. And so is my Royal Duke. I have a Firestar that is very well made.

Australia, being a former colony, is very UK and Europe-centric with its imports of pipes. Britwoods, Italians, French and Danish. Even Turkish, Austrian and African meers.
I can’t recall coming across ANY American factory-made pipes when I took up pipe smoking in the 1970s

So thank you everyone for your posts on Dr Grabows, KBB/Kaywoodies, LH Stern, WDC, Pipes by Lee, Marxman et al.

Very enlightening.

It's sad what happened to uncle Ben and his rice and all. You have my condolences. :)

The real life Uncle Ben was the toughest, most handsome and rugged boy in Preston Missouri when the first born daughter of Ma Agee walked by and he whipped two other boys and made proper gentlemen of the rest, for whistling at her.

Ma Agee had a son and an son in law both in France in 1945, headed for Berlin.

Both died of old age.

But the real tragedy was Mark Miller loved photography and guns.

It turned out to be the death of him in Tulsa in 2010, killed by his own pistol.

Here’s one for you, Mark.

The back story was a pretty girl in the townhouse complex knew he had a pistol, and boys from Humansville and Preston and Hermitage and thereabouts aren’t afraid of danger as much as they should be, you know?

I need to stop procrastinating.
I have half a dozen old Grabows I got from random ebay lots over the years. They are in good condition, just typical grime and grunge. If for nothing else, to give away for others to enjoy.
The bowls of Dr Grabow are generally too small for my liking.

I own several Grabows as well - one in particular is among my favorites. As you can see in my avatar, I'm particularly fond of their Authors! Surprisingly good briar on at least the old models.
Beginners and experienced pipe enthusiasts certainly could do worse than getting one of the discontinued Grabow models..

I have a few Grabows from when I started. They mostly are haunted with the ghosts of the aromatics I burned through as a newbie trying to find my way in the pipe world, but while they're not my favorite I do bring them out every once and a while. I had one of mine at a wedding party not too long ago and the brides friend that was smoking with me enjoyed the smell of the cherry blend I brought. To everything there is a season I suppose.

I seem to remember a Grabow (maybe?) I had many moons ago that was meershaum lined. It got put in a box for a while, when I found it again, the lining was cracked and in the bin it went.
Maybe it wasn't a Grabow, but thats what I thought it was. Way too long ago.....

This one I bought for $21 delivered on eBay will make Dr Grabow Golden Duke Adjustomatic number four. Look for both Adjustomatic AND a patent number. Early Golden Duke Adjustomatics are better grained.

This is why Dr Grabow won the pipe wars.

If you could get it, what would such a fancy grained new pipe cost today?

Grabow are what they are. its easy to say get one, on petty smokers i caught more flack then a little guy in a prison shower when i talked about the issues i had, when i was full time smoking in 2002-2008.

mis drilled shanks, seriously the cavity for the filter needs to stay centered with the airway from the chamber to stem. Very bad in the bents i had. They were like the savinelli dry system.

For the price, or maybe 10$, you can get Ropp or Rossi pipes, even on sale Savinelli...

The Grabow I bought and smoked on Uncle Ben’s midnight run past a blizzard in 1976 was not an Adjustomatic, wasn’t pre smoked, and was a modern Grabow with split metal tenon.

But there was a period from about 1964 to maybe 1969 when Grabow sold a a $5 Golden Duke Adjustomatic that was just a phenomenally fancy grained pipe.

The top pipe is one of my Pre War Kaywoodie Flame Grains.

The bottom is a $5 new Grabow Golden Duke Adjustomatic with patent number

The varnish Grabow dipped those in, comes off with Murphy’s Oil Soap and 4/0 steel wool very easily, leaving the polished surface underneath.

The Grabow is nearly new, and will go right on to color to oxblood like the Kaywoodie, with use.

As I get older I remember more of little things, like how we stopped for coffee at a long closed truck stop at Clinton.

The waitress wanted to know if Ben was my father, and he said the boy’s too good looking to have been mine, must have been the postman’s, the milk man’s or the meter reader’s kid.:)

The girl smiled at me, as we left into the light snow.

God, how I miss old time truck stops.
