I recently got back from checking out a lot of about 30 estate pipes. The seller got them from a relative who had passed away, and had posted some online. I thought it might be a good opportunity to get some nice estates, as through email they had mentioned some names I were familiar with.
When I got there I found the pipes all coarsely sanded down, almost to the point of rustifacation. There were deep gouges in the bowls and stems. Some of them even had the stems glued on!
I had to pass on them all, probably a good thing, I don't really need anymore pipes. But it was sad to see a nice collection of mostly freehands roughed up so badly.
