I have recently bought my first royal yacht tin, by dunhill. Honestly I was in Germany, again, and found myself in a tobacco shop nurturing my TAD. I only bought the tin because I read so many controversial reviews and opinions on it. To be honest with you, I love it. It gives me a bit of heartburn, as most Virginias, va/pers, va/burs do, so I have to smoke it filtered, but I simply love the taste. Unfortunately I cannot find it where I live, and I won't be in Germany a while now. Can you guys recommend something of similar taste/aroma? Cheers !! :puffpipe:

Sunny Cornwall, UK.
Madox, I think you will find Royal Yacht to be one of those blends like Condor that is pretty unique and no successful match has been made.
Erinmore Flake has a similar fruity topping but in my opinion is a very different tobacco altogether.
Good luck in your search :puffy:
Regards,
Jay.

Deniz, I think the saying goes, it's better to have loved and lost then not loved at all.. I am stuffing dunhill blends into my cellar like a madman, nothing compares to them in my estimation. :worship:

As near as I can tell, you'd look for a quality Virginia base tobacco with a plum aromatic. Royal Yacht is a real secret blend, so the proportions and actual flavoring agent will never be revealed, but that's where you'd start looking. If there's something else in there, I've never heard it mentioned. Being a burley lover, I'd like to think it was that, but of course, there ain't no burley in there. I think the best chance is not to find a Royal Yacht match but to discover some really excellent sophisticated artistically blended aromatics. As a mostly non-aro smoker, I find many aromatics heavy handed, but there is a whole school of higher grade aros that are excellent. None of the ones I've tried are "like" Royal Yacht, but several are excellent in their own rights.

I did not find the match to be convincing at all:

I have not tried Hudson Bay but it appears unavailable.
It is not similar in taste, but as far as other "power Virginias," the closest match is Brown Twist Sliced.
All hail the brotherhood of the 'Yacht.

Thanks for the input guys ... I am not even sure we could catalog this blend as an aro. I think deathmetal has pointed this out in another post, by labeling some blends half aros, or something of the sort - can't remember the exact term. It is definitely plum tasting, but it's not your regular soapy aromatic. It's sort of similar in as far as aroma style as probably Hyde Park by Peterson - a broken flake va/bur I have tasted recently (of course this one is not plum, but some maple/honey aroma). I have started viewing aromatics kinder due to these blends ...

The key with aromatics for me is to have a quality base leaf proportioned so the blend is tobacco forward. tango sent me some Peretti Thanksgiving Day that is a buffet of flavorings, but done with a light touch so the tobacco glides through the blend. Flavorings listed, with burley and Va., are anisette, fruit, citrus, and rum, cut crumbly cake. It's quite a show, but done with precision and subtlety.

I can agree with "semi-aromatic." It has a topping, but it is more of a complement to the natural taste than designed to be the dominant taste. With Royal Yacht, you taste mostly tobacco, complemented by plum and the blood of echidnas or whatever they use to flavor it. With your average soda pop aro, like a cherry tobacco, you taste cherry on plant matter than naturally tastes nothing like that. In some aros, I wonder if they are even using tobacco at all, since grass clippings soaked in PG and flavorings would probably make a fairly tasty smoke.
