Below is Wing Commander Robert Stanford Tuck (with pipe), a Battle of Britain veteran who had something like 28 air to air kills before he was shot down and captured. Next to him is Roger Bushell, the famous mastermind of the Great Escape, later executed by the Germans. This photo was taken in the Stalag Luft III prison camp. Bushell was Tuck’s commanding officer before Bushell was shot down in 1940, and the two were close friends (and roommates in the camp). Tuck was one of the group of prisoners purged from Stalag Luft III by the Germans, and therefore did not take part in the Great Escape. Given his previous history of being a troublesome prisoner with multiple escape attempts, he almost certainly would have been among the executed escapees had he been there. Thus, the purge likely saved his life. His flying career and time as a prisoner were very interesting, and anyone interested in the period should read his biography “Fly For Life” if you can find a used copy of the book.

That's awesome and thank you for the history, so many stories from the war that were never told and forgotten in the winds of time, it's something to hear some of them, even watching movies like the Great Escape, i'll always start to google the events and try to find out what actually happened not just the twisted hollywood version to sell tickets.

Watched this last night & I'd like to thank you for posting it!👍
What a generation of men they were..... the very best of us.
@krizzose you should watch this too as Stanford Tuck makes an appearance. @edger would like it as well, he's always banging on about Douglas Bader. Like me, being the proud owner of a Blakemar 'Sir Douglas' pipe.🙂

The movie illustrated how the Great Escape group got spotted at a restaurant because they had American table manners, switching the silverware in hand rather than leaving the fork in the left hand and the knife in the right. Yankees. The Germans grabbed them. The escapees might have figured that out, but they were probably intensely hungry.

The Brit method with cutlery would have gotten the food into their gobs quickest....more efficient!!
