I think this thread is fine. I'm sure smooth was attempting to be funny. Not all our jokes are successful every time. This one fell flat on its face. In poor taste? Sure. Not funny because of subject matter? For my part, definitely. But I won't begrudge someone their own sense of humor. This said, if this thread meanders out into the field to far and away from Robert Service, it will be closed. Thank you. -Management

Smooth totally accepts the whip marks left from the outraged high class folks who applied the whip after reading a bit of bad gallows humor which fell flat with them. I fear the low class sorts just laughed, shook their heads, and moved on.

Robert Service was definitely a man who understood the joys of a pipe. Here's an excerpt from "The Three Bares"
...To smoke me pipe an' meditate, an' maybe write a pome,

For that's the time when bits o' rhyme gits jiggin' in me dome.'

He sat down on that special seat slicked shiny by his age,

And looking like Walt Whitman, jest a silver-whiskered sage,
He filled his corn-cob to the brim and tapped it snugly down,

And chuckled: `Of a perfect day I reckon this the crown.'

He lit the weed, it soothed his need, it was so soft and sweet:...

Two of my favorite Service poems are "The Haggis of Private McPhee" and "The Ballad of How MacPherson Held the Floor". Both humorous - nothing to do with pipes - but lots of fun.

I love it! Service is my favorite poet and I shouldn't be suprised that my fellow pipe smoking sophisitcates know him as well.
