Who knows what was in vogue at the time (or even when it was made)? At one point, men wore high heels, pink and more makeup than a modern day OF model... so, maybe a lady of X era would have thought that to be a sophisticated, elegant pipe?

Well, I suppose you are right. There is no accounting for taste or trends.
I could actually see some gal smoking it today easier than I could in the Victorian era, or whenever it was used.
