One of the guys sent along a few tins of various Mac Baren blends for the Free Pipe Project and one of the blends I got was the 7 Seas Red. I have sent all but a bowl or two out to the guys and decided to give it a try.
The Tin description is as follows. An aromatic blend of tobacco with light brown Burleys, sweet rich Golden Virginias, and just the right amount of Black Cavendish. It pack's just great and upon lighting you will experience a sweet freshness and light richness of Wild Cherry along with a very faint overtone of Fruit.
I have to say that I used to be a big aromatic smoker, but smoke mostly flakes now, that being said I will try just about anything once. I think it is safe to say that every starting pipe smoker desires to find a tasty cherry blend, but they almost don't exist. The only one I have found that is quite delicious is Hobbit's Weed. But despite my expectations of failure I continue to try cherry or berry blends in the hopes of finding something remarkable.
In the case of 7 seas red, I have to say I'm impressed. The tin note is a very sharp almost candy like and the room note is very similar to the tin note. It did pack very nicely and is just the right moisture level, not goopy at all. Despite the strong tin note the flavor is not overpowering and not mediciny as many cherrys tend to be. It is a nice smooth smoke, lots of big white billowy puffs and just a subtle cherry or fruit flavor. And best of all no bite. I would recommend this to the aromatic smoker hoping to relive the good old days of sitting by granddad smoking his pipe.
