In the sticks in Mississippi
About 2 years ago I bought an orange colored Diplomat 5th Avenue custom cob off of eBay, and posted it here. I got some folks pointing and laughing, but I'm not sure they're here anymore. Never mind. It was, I agree a rather gaudy cob, but it had a cool acrylic stem on it, and I kinda liked it. I had to rework the stem a bit as it was rather clunky, but after some filing and sanding it was a nice comfortable stem. However, it was such a long pipe, that it was hard to clench, and rather unwieldy. I haven't smoked it in over a year, but I had an idea on how to make it a more comfortable smoking pipe.
I ended up cutting off about 1/2" off the shank, and about 1/4" off the tenon. It took some drilling, filing, and sanding to get them to fit together again, but now it's comfortable smoking pipe. I also didn't try to fit the metal cap on the end of the shank, but rather stained and polished the end of the shank and left it as is. I like the looks of it now even more than the original. Yeah, I know it's still orange, so you can continue to point and laugh. :nana:

Very nice! I tried that on a cob once, but was too impatient, and well it didn't work out...and it's dead now.

Yeah, it was stained orange when I got it and probably given a clear varnish. The color in the second photo is truer to the real color. I must have mounted the stem reversed in that photo, but it doesn't make any real difference. I gotta say, it smokes just as well as it originally did only it's more comfortable to smoke now, and for some reason, I like the looks better, especially with the metal cap missing on the shank.
I should probably reserve this pipe to smoke Rattray's Exotic Orange...
