I spent the first 18 years of my life watching my dad chain smoke a drugstore pipe full of Captain Black, back to back. He never seems to have any problems with his pipe. He just replaced them when he broke them, etc.

A lot of people especially on YouTube preach 7 day rotation. I'm not telling you what to so with your pipe, but to me its non-sense. It's a pipe meant to be smoked. The minute mine is cooled down I smoke it again. I've never broken a pipe doing this. I smoke my pipe all day. I don't know where this started, maybe pipe makers wanting to sell more pipes. Some may disagree with me, thats fine, but until I break a pipe doing it I'm not gonna stop.

I don't think retation is so much about "breaking" a pipe, but about getting the best taste from the pipe. I notice that if I smoke one that has been resting for a long time it tends to smoke exceptionally well. puffy

Oh okay. I was under the impression from YouTube it was to stop moisture build up and then the pipe cracks. Thanks, my next smoke I'll smoke a rested pipe and see what I notice.

The same, whether it's 2 Savinellis, 2 MM cobs or 2 100yo Antiques.

Pipes smoke "sour" or taste foul if you smoke wet due to XS wet dottle or accumulation of condensate and tars in the shank/mortise and stem.

Using pipe cleaners and reaming the chamber out with scrunched paper towels after each smoke will help.
I do that immediately after each bowl - always.

A water flush will also help.

Some pipe material eg cobs and meerschaum smoke drier than briar as they are more absorbent.

Some members here smoke the one pipe repeatedly throughout the day with no ill effects to themselves to the pipe 😄
Me, I rest my pipes several months between smokes, only because it takes that long before their turn comes around for another smoke. 😏

Really, there are no rules regarding resting pipes.
If the pipe smokes "sweet", you're good to go again.
If it is "sour", give it a good clean and allow it to dry fully before your next smoke.

It's all about keeping the chamber, and airways clean and dry.
I hope this helps.

Youtube is one of the worst places for information on pipe smoking. Clean a pipe after smoking it and there won't be any leftover moisture. Hang a pipe after smoking it without cleaning and you're asking for bacterial growth to sour the pipe. I often smoke the same pipe multiple times per day for for sometimes weeks at a time before switching to another but I disassemble and clean them after each smoke.

Pipe smokers started this idea of rotating pipes ... or using certain pipes for a particular blend or style of tobacco as a justification for their PAD or to get approval from the missus ... :col:

In the semi-rural NorthEastern USA
once it's dry. And if you do still smoke it too quickly you might have to swab it out with alcohol or something. Unless you really chain smoke a pipe the worst thing that happens is it sours, which just means it starts tasting nasty. Nasty like you'll keep checking your shoes to figure out what kind of dog poo you stepped in.

Yep, just run the old pipe cleaner through, pack another bowl and go... it will be plenty cool by the time you do that. I agree that pipe resting/rotation is pretty much a myth.
