Hello everyone. I am a new member here and have just started smoking my pipes again after about 30 years (obviously a long story). I have one very nice smoker that I'd love to know more about. It is a Butz-Choquin Camargue and I am wondering if there is a way to determine precisely when it was made (mid 70s?) and anything else I can find out about it. I checked the BC site and did not find the pipe there so I thought I'd ask here to see if anyone knows of a good resource for older BC pipes. I'll upload a pic soon, but for now, it's a nice smooth brown briar with a lucite shank and black bakelite (maybe) stem. It is marked as follows: left side of the bowl -- Butz-Choquin Camargue, right side -- St. Claude, France 4314, left side of the shank has the round inset BC. I really enjoy smoking this pipe, but becoming a member here has piqued my interest. Thanks for any help. Bob

Let me take a look at pipedia and see what I can find.
Edit: Pipedia didn't have very much history on the pipes, just their origin story and how they came to be. Pipedia is usually very good about including date guides for big pipe manufacturers, but I guess Butz Choquin isn't one of them. If I had a pic I could maybe give you a better idea, though there are a lot of fellas on this forum with more knowledge of them that I have.

Welcome to the Forum and welcome back to pipe smoking, Can't help you with your BC, they are the most popular of French pipe makers and have a very diverse range and are very innovative with their design, great pipes.

While you might be able to narrow down an era, I don't think a Butz-Choquin can be dated. Have you tried to contact the manufacturer in France? If not, you can email them via this weblink. They will most likely need some digital photos of the pipe and any nomenclature.

I have a three James Upshall pipes and emailed them with pictures requesting info on when one bent billiard was made. The owner was able to determine it was made in the early 90's because of the stamping style that was used.
Good luck and keep us posted on what you find out.

Thanks guys, I'll try the manufacturer (thanks, Al). In the meantime, I know I like the way it smokes.
