Ok...so I didn't find a Churchwarden. I found this picture of a Colonial man about to smoke his Churchwarden. It's printed on wood, framed and made in Japan. I paid $1.49. I cleaned it up and hung next to my lifesize Ben Franklin bust.
I renovated the enclosed back porch into a smoking room. I still have to install baseboard heat for the winter and finish with the decor.

jpm, it's not a cut out. Not really sure. It's flush with the surface...can't feel any outline.

It's wood though. You can see the wood grain (look just above his head).

Is that really normal for churchwarden to be that long? just asking...
Modern churchwardens aren't quite that long. There may be some out there that are, but I'm assuming that's quite rare. However, some clay churchwardens, often called tavern pipes, quite often are. I have one myself that's about that long.

Trudat. Back then it was the equivalent of today's TV/reading pipe, the only way to have a relatively cool smoke, & a way to be able to get as many uses as possible out of a pipe before breakage finally took its toll.
