Hi!

Ive been looking to try to hone my tastes to to try to see if i can find the tobaccos used in blends.
also at the same time try to get some friends into the hobby by letting them try a bunch of blends.

If you could list one blend to represent each tobacco type which would you choose for each?

Cavendish -
Latakia -
Burley -
Perique -
Virginia -
Oriental -
any I'm missing?

North Georgia mountains.
As far as trying to develop a palate for tobacco, I'd try sampling blending components. I tried this early on and not only was it really helpful, but I discovered some components I love straight - I also discovered what I don't like, even when blended. Sutliff and C&D offer some great bulk samples of said components.
As far as recommendations, I don't think I could be of much help. There's just so many variables per category. Each blend type listed is it's own rabbit hole.
I'm sure others will be glad to list out there favorites though. Best of luck

It may be better to look at tobacco sold and meant for blending, then you'll get straight tobaccos. But this could be costly, I don't know if blending tobacco requires a minimum amount to order. I think C&D makes blending tobaccos in smaller tins, but I never looked into it.

Mac Baren's HH series is a good place to look for different things to get a good feel for different components, just compare and contrast. Like, their HH Burley Flake does have a touch of VA and ODF I think, but you can compare that to the HH Old Dark Fired and HH Virginia. But the HH line is marked by very minimal casing and no topping, so you'll get a pretty pure flavor. They have HH tobaccos in most of those categories.

But, there's more than just looking at VA for example. There's a difference between bright and mature VA, stoved and unstoved VA, etc. You'll have to try several of them to understand.

Even then, the way a particular type of tobacco tastes when smoked straight can be different than how it tastes in a blend. Blending can cause flavors to muddle a bit, especially when you're talking about hot pressed flakes. Some tobaccos may enhance certain aspects and attenuate others of the flavor of another tobacco blended together, which makes things more difficult.

It's going to take some time and comparative tasting.

Off the top of my head, of the readily available blends:

Cavendish - Lane BCA
Latakia - Peterson 965
Burley - Crooner (note that it has deer tongue in it too)
Virginia - Mac Baren Virginia No. 1
Oriental - C&D Rajah's Court
Perique - I don't know; after 20 years I still don't understand perique and have a hard time identifying it. Could it be the peppery part of the smoke, the one that tickles my nose? I don't know.

I say just smoke and pay attention to what's in what you're smoking. after a while you'll organically get a pretty good idea of what you are tasting. Especially when you start to find you're craving something in particular. Though it always gets complicated. It's amazing how two blends can be made of the same things but change the ratios and something dramatic comes out of it.

sounds like blending Tobacco may be the way to go in order to try each category,

still curious which blends people first think of when they see each option

I've been greatly enjoying Crooner lately, the Deertongue adds a lot to it - I walk past my bag (not a jar, because I am a filthy casual), and I can smell it from feet away. Smells kinda like chamomile.
