Early this year I asked for opinions here about Hilson pipes. The comments were positive so I got one. Then a few more, etc. Now I have 15. These pipes were turned in the 1970s, then the company closed. It was sold not too long ago and the buyer received a lot of unfinished small pipes. Most are about a Dunhill #2 size. The pipes were finished and they were sold as Vintage Hilsons. There are two versions. The best are labelled Special Grain. The Specials sell for about $106 at Alpascia, the others cost approx. $70 at Pipes & Cigars. Predictably the regulars do not smoke quite as well as the Specials, which have a tighter grain. The regulars have a metal device at the tenon which prevents passing a cleaner through. It is easily removed and discarded. The stems of these pipes are quite slim. One of the 15 had the tenon broken off inside the pipe when I tried to remove the stem. Way too tight, but this is sometimes a problem with much more expensive pipes as well. Overall these Hilsons are the best smoking pipes for the price that I have tried. Once broken in, the Specials are as good as anything. I often smoke one when I want a short smoke, and recommend them. They are all smooth finished and the stain does not ruin the taste of the pipe. A bargain.
